Esper Genesis 5E Sci-fi - Core Manual

Watermarked PDF

"This is not a game that wants to be the property-of-your-choice, it’s a game that embraces sci-fi’s adventurous side. It is sci-fi with room for excitement and wonder. And 5E proves an excellent match for this, since EG’s relationship to sci-fi is much like 5E’s relationship to fantasy - it is part of the landscape, but the first priority is to play a game." — Rob Donoghue, Evil Hat Productions

“Esper Genesis takes a proven system we all know and maps it onto an exciting new science fiction setting. These folks have really drilled down into 5th edition rules and popular cinematic sci-fi and made it all work together." — Cam Banks, RPG Designer

This is such an amazing setting. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but would to consider adapting this to other systems, such as Pathfinder/Starfinder?

Hey DriveThruRPG, this game should not show up under Hard Sci-Fi please.

Thank you so much for this product. I bought the collector's edition at GenCon and couldn't LOVE it more.
On multiclassing, it says that if you choose Engineer, you gain shield proficiencies. However, Engineers don't normally receive them. Is that correct as written?
Customer avatar
Luke W October 08, 2018 11:23 pm UTC
From the errata:
"Multiclassing Proficiencies (pg. 147). The Proficiencies Gained for the Engineer should be listed as “Light armor, medium armor, one artisan tool or vehicle proficiency (your choice)."

Why.. OH WHY.. Aren't the spell names searchable in the PDF?

I'm not a crybaby who presumes I can tell a company how to run its business. Screw a bunch of OGL. Use it. Don't use it. I don't care. Great game, by the way. Too bad some people have become political about this.

The publisher of this product used the Open Game License to build the rules, then 100% made all new content NOT available to other publishers using the OGL. As a firm supporter of the OGL I do not recommend supporting publishers so unfriendly to the OGL. Would not buy again and ideally would like my money back, but not expecting a refund.

Hi, John. Thank you for your feedback! We are still a game in development with two more core books to go. That being said, once the core of the game is completed, we fully intend to look into working out specifics toward creating an open product resource. Making the game universally 5E compatible has been our intention from the very start and we wholeheartedly support everyone who uses the 5E OGL to promote their own creative ideas. My apologies if the game isn't what you were looking for. We're working hard to make this game a fun and awesome experience for everyone. If, for whatever reason, you are unhappy with the product itself, please feel free to contact us directly through or any of our social media links.

Hey Rich, I'd rather you used the OGL in the spirit it was intended, like other publishers such as Paizo do, and reserve the standard things like pronouns (place and people names etc.) as Product Identity vs. locking EVERYTHING down so that other OGL publishers can't use your unique ideas in their products, which, as stated, is the entire idea of the OGL. In this product you've basically tried to gain all the benefits of the OGL (getting to use content that others share via the OGL) but then don't do the same (share ANYTHING back to other OGL publishers.) I humbly suggest you rethink your use of the OGL in this and future products.

Hi, John. It seems you may not have read my entire response or perhaps misread it. We intend to look into having an open product resource for others to use, however, such a thing will not happen during these months while the core game is in development. Under the presumption that you are a game manufacturer, I'm sure you know the reasons why. However, thank you kindly for your recommendation and I humbly ask that you simply be patient. Again, if you are unhappy with the game itself, please feel free to contact us as stated above and we'll be sure to accommodate you.

John, out of curiosity, are you similarly upset at Cubicle 7 for using the OGL to make Adventures in Middle-Earth?

To the authors: : )

- will I be able to get a discount on the physical product if I buy the PDF version... or the other way around (like preordering the physical book on Amazon and gettin' a voucher for the PDF)? :)

- Would you HONESTLY tell that, for a reasnoable amount of time, the Core book will be enough and (as it seems from the reviews) a bit more "complete" than the standard PHB?

Consider I almost hate 5e and this game is kinda pushing me back (I got the free basic rules and found them insanely intriguing). :)

Not an author, but the Core Manual has almost the same content as the PHB plus a starship chapter with 3 PC and 5 NPC starships and a setting chapter.

How are the ship building and ship combat rules? Also, what does this game provide that Starfinder doesn't? (These are honest questions; I'm not trying to be snarky.)
Customer avatar
Brian D July 11, 2018 5:52 pm UTC
The ship building rules are still being written :)
They will be in the Master Technician's Guide, which will be out later this year.

Starship combat (which is in the Core Manual) is based on the 5E ground combat system. Spaceships have a base monster stat block which is modified by the PCs abilities as they take their stations within the ship, increasing things like Speed, AC, HP, etc... The ship acts on a single initiative, so the crew needs to coordinate their plan of action each round. Every station has a different role, and a variety of action choices within each role. The crew decides the order they want to attempt their actions, but they all happen as part of the ship's turn.

Because the ship combat system is integrated into the normal 5e combat round, there's no need for an additional combat system for starships. As a result, you can blend a ship combat with normal combat in the same turn - if you're in a dogfight and your ship is boarded, PCs can get up from their stations...See more

Does the physical version on include a Drivethru PDF?
Customer avatar
Rich L July 11, 2018 5:11 pm UTC
Hi, Riccardo. The physical version was a pre-order which was only available before they went out to Kickstarter backers. It's no longer on the site, but should be available at local gaming stores after Gen Con.
Customer avatar
Riccardo C July 12, 2018 8:11 am UTC
Ok now I'm worried: I surfed the website on Sunday and found that printed pre-order included pdf, so I pre-ordered all of them two days ago (9 july, printed, they where fully available), including the printed Core. It's all processed and I have it on my Backerkit... Am I ok or should I contact the website?

As a sidenote I already have the Core pdf, I was more interested in the Threat and Master.

Are these the most current and up to date rules? Just looking at the table for the Adept, and there are a few mistakes. The rules mention getting more Psionic Combat modes according to the table, but I don't see any mention of those increases in the table. Also, according to the table the Adept never goes above Level 5 for the Maximum Talent Rank, which seems odd.

To the developer:
I live in Brazil.
we've got a little issue with the currency of this game....since cu means ânus :D
Customer avatar
Rich L May 23, 2018 11:08 am UTC
Hi, Luan. Please be advised that the term "cu" is an abbreviation for the full word: "Cubil (pronounced as kee-YOO-bil)". The common abbreviation should be pronounced by the letters c.u. (like "See You"). That should help with avoiding the profanity. :)

Will their be hardcovers available for download soon, and how would I go converting barbarians and monks. I kinda feel I should leave them as is due to their primitive and secluded nature, but at the same time... Barbarians with shotguns
Customer avatar
Rich L May 16, 2018 4:40 pm UTC
Hardcovers will be available at your local gaming stores within a few months. They'll also be available for sale at Origins Game Fair and Gen Con. The system is fully 5E compatible, so I don't see why you can't just fit those classes directly into it. Whether or not they'll have to learn new proficiencies for gear, vehicles, etc would be completely up to you or your GM.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
