You step from the cool shade of the Long Branch Saloon into the midday heat of Promise City. Loosening your Colt in its holster, you look down Main Street and spot the leather and denim-clad stranger who called you out. Citizens of the town scramble for cover as they sense the forthcoming battle. The outlaw doesn't look fast enough to match your draw, but ... wait! Your keen eyes catch the unmistakable glint of the sun against gun metal from the roof of the dance hall—the yellow coward has a buddy who's going to shoot you in the back! What will you do? Think fast. or you'll be the next resident of ... BOOT HILL!

BOOT HILL is the game of role-playing in the Wild West of history and legend. Each player adopts the persona of their character, becoming a shift less outlaw robbing banks and stages, a renegade half-breed leading Indians on the warpath, a straight-shooting sheriff determined to clean up the town, and so on. This boxed version contains a revised and expanded rules booklet (which now includes ratings for many of the real-life "fastest guns that ever lived"), a campaign map for El Dorado County ("Somewhere in the Southwest"), and a 34" X 22" map of Promise City, including a movement grid which can be used with the counters provided or by miniatures, and detailed structure drawings showing door, window. and stair locations as well as the height of the buildings! BOOT HILL merges the West of movies, television, and literature with reality to form the locale for endless hours of adventure and fun. Strap on your gunbelt, and enter the world of BOOT HILL!

Note on the Print Edition: For this version all off the maps and counters have been included as bonus pages in the book. If you plan on using them at the game table it is recommended that you purchase the PDF+Print combo deal and print them from the PDF.

I have a question about the POD. Is the book cover the color one on the book or the book inside?

Oops ... couple mistakes in my example below. In the 2nd turn, B would have cover behind the wall, not A. Got the characters switched out.

Also, there were *TWO* modules, most likely produced without permission, circulating on the U.K. version of Ebay a few years back. I believe one was called "Iron Horse." My guess it was a single issue item someone made and simply wanted to sell, so I would guess WOTC would not cry foul. Anyone have any details at all about these?

Thank you for explaining the Northfield Rule in detail. Boot Hill is an excellent "skirmish" game that doesn't get the love it deserves. We play it with 28mm miniatures and an entire town built of balsa wood, including a scale railroad train. Lots of chaos!

I stumbled across a new BH 2nd Edition module here on drivethrurpg. It is called "The Devil Comes to Swan Gulch" by GagMen Productions.
I downloaded a copy and read it. It is free to download and I think it is good enough to make a donation.
Here is a link to it:

Also, here is a link to a list of all the Boot Hill modules/supplements:

One thing: I've noticed concerns about are the (3) combat systems including in this 2nd Edition.

Basic Combat: in which *randomly* determined initiative for movement took place BEFORE combat occurred - meaning characters could move out of being fired upon into full cover (or what-have you). Then a "First Shot Determination" (basically all the modifiers to a static # including weapon speed)to determined who fired first was calculated.

Several Advanced combat versions included Simultaneous Movement (still occurring before firing); and Alternate First Shot Determination (FSD) in which characters with higher Net Speed (Speed Attribute mod + weapon speed + etc.) could interrupt movement with fire if they themselves did not move; and finally a rule allowing for multiple shots being fired before those with slower Net Speeds could. Needless to say, it was enjoyably complicated.

**EXCEPT** for that darn rule about moving BEFORE firing took place. It was just weird - having...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
