NGS is an adventure setting for Trav/Cepheus Engine, but it should be easy to adapt to other sci-fi rule systems as well. The rules presented here are a solo or GM-less framework for telling a story of exploration, discovery, mysteries, and survival.  It kind of plays like Oregon Trail (if it was an RPG set in space.)  You have a crew, equipments, specialists, and a mission.

The PDF includes info on setting up your ship, selecting a mission, tips on solo play, a large 'encounter table' of pregenerated star system, and rosters for all the crew (pilot, navigator, engineer, and gunner) and a large list of patrons and mission specialists, as well as four subsector maps for your exploring.

Is it just me, or does anyone else see a particularly bad word embedded in the "symbol" for this system? I see an F on its right side at the top; The letter U is just below that (resembling a V); A similarly-shaped large C is on its left side at the bottom; and a somewhat disguised K is on its left side in the middle. Since I have no idea what that extra letter E is there for, perhaps all of it is just my imagination. Or does the design purposely use those letters? Please tell me I'm wrong.

Tilt your head to the right. It says FRED, one of the aliens in the setting. It probably means something completely different like Ensign Narzly Gill. But, that's what the first explorers saw on the chest patch and the nickname stuck. :-)

Or, it might be a hand feeding a hungry creature. No one has actually spoken to a live Fred to find out.

Good grief! I never saw that! Well, I guess you now know where my thinking usually goes. My apologies for misunderstanding.

No problem, it gave me a good excuse to spill some of the lore that didn't make it into the text. [Yes, I played the whole first contact scene out in my head so I would have the 'history' of the discovery.]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
