WHAT THE REVIEWERS SAY

"During no other roleplaying game, and certainly not during a solo game, have I ever felt myself so on edge to find out what happens next ... All in all, probably the best new rpg I've played all year."
- Ethan U.

"I've played both the solo and GM-less group options and had some of the most fun I've ever had playing RPGs."
- Chris F.

"This is a well designed, clearly presented and extensively playtested product ... The rules are designed for flexibility and the author provides detailed advice to adapt the game to different settings."
- Evandro N.

"This is on the path to becoming one of my (if not THE) go-to choices for gritty narrative fantasy games."
- Stefanos P.

"Frankly, this is one of the best uses of the PbtA rules I've ever read. Evocative, simple, and the quality of the book is high for it being completely free."

Can I get some confusion clarified? At the beginning of the rule book (page 2 of chapter 1), it says 2 generations have passed. When creating a world, the quest "starter" ideas in the truths chapter suggest several generations have passed. Just wondering which should have priority. Thanks

Hi! Best advise is to take what makes most sense for you. For example in my setting I decided the ironlanders are there for several hundreds of years.

Or may be some settlements are older than others ?
The oldest became a bit strangers too.. I'm not comfortable with them.. I think they're hiding something in their history .. ;)

(Time for me to go back playing my character...)

Great! Even better if this helps to develop the story.

In the "official" lore, it's two generations. But obviously adjustable to your preferences.

Which truths aren't lining up for you? There are a couple that refer to historical events in the Old World.

It's no so much the truths not lining up as the quest starter suggestion for the Skulde Invasion of the Old World setup. The quest starter suggests the player as a descendant of the Skulde, which says multiple generations have passed.
Thanks for the replies.

Hi, great game! Maybe you or somebody in this forum can answer my question:
Does a weak hit on the fulfill your vow move unlocks the weaponmaster asset?
Thanks.
Customer avatar
Dr. Lars D February 10, 2021 3:49 pm UTC
PURCHASER
I would say no. Refer to the description of the move „fulfill your vow“: on a strong hit the vow is fulfilled. On a weak hit there is more to be done.

It might vary a bit depending on how you envision the weak hit. Mostly I'd suggest that it should allow you to take that asset, assuming you follow-up by forging a bond with them. The weak hit might be that this seasoned warrior is not who you thought they were, and their true nature complicates things. Or they agree to train you, but ask something else of you as part of this training.

So far I love this game. I have a question though and since I'm not of reddit or facebook I thought I'dask here. Are there any mechanics to being cursed? Through a very bad series of events, and worse rolls culminating with a double 10 miss, my character got killed in a fight before he even started his quest and then came back after cutting a deal with Death. The rule book says to envision how he has changed and one of the things I have been thinking of is to swap one asset out with a new one to kind of solidify the change. Even if he is able to fulfill the vow he swore with Death I don't see how he wouldn't be permanently changed by his experience. Is that allowed? And thanks for putting the cursed burden in, while it wasn't how I wanted to start it fleshed out a lot of what is really going on in my Ironlands and will make the quests more interesting.

Cursed is a debility, so reduces your max momentum and momentum reset values. This is the mechanical representation of how the curse weighs upon you.

Narratively, you now need to take a deathbound quest and perhaps deal with other ramifications of your experience beyond the veil.

If you complete the quest, you remove the cursed debility.

Best RPG. And the best part is that I have found my solo rpg. For everyone who enjoys narrative (solo) RPG with a lite ruleset. The solo gaming is not prewritten. The engine is you!

For me the best rpg!

Thanks Shawn!

Hello. I have a quick question. When I Forge a Bond I mark 1 tick on my progress track. When I Write my Epilogue I have to consider the completely filled boxes only. How do I add more ticks on the same bond? I couldn't find this written clearly anywhere on the book (maybe I'm just not looking enough).

Thanks in advance

Edoardo

The bonds progress track represents all of the bonds you've forged. One tick per bond. So, you aren't advancing a specific bond along the track. When you Write Your Epilogue, you are rolling against the bonds progress track to represent the connections you created with people and communities.

Me and my wife started our Ironsworn co-op GM-less campaing yesterday and played it for few hours already. After a few minutes I was buying the Delve expansion.

This game is innovative: this way to play is refreshening and the game itself it is probably one of the few truly new things I've ever found in 20 years of roleplaying gaming.

It is based on one of the best (and most innovative by itself) systems of all times (PbtA).

The fun begins with character creation, world bulding, campaign framing, adenture outlining and so on. It's absolutely easy and fun to do.

The way the book it's written makes it easy to read, very well structured, and you do not need to go through the whole book to start playing.

And of course, it is impossible not mention that this is free. FREE. The whole thing. Not just a quickstart or a demo or a quick rule summary.

Being a wanna-be book writer myself and being a lot into gaming system and so on I can say this...See more

I bought the printed (hardcover) book some time ago but have not yet got into playing it, but just got delve and the other asset cards for it and am interested in giving it a try soon. I know there have been some changes since I purchased the printed book. Is there somewhere that has all the errata and changes all listed in one place? Thanks in advance and have a great day!

I purchased the POD versions of Ironsworn, the Asset cards (vol. 1 & 2), and the Lodestar back in 2018. If I understand correctly, I can update my cards with volume 3 (I got the email for the discounted purchase), but have there been any significant updates to the core book and Lodestar so as to render my copies out-of-date?

Nope! You are fine with your existing core book and Lodestar.

Unfortunately, the card decks and books are printed/shipped from separate vendors. So, you'll make those two orders separately and pay shipping for both. That's the bad news. The good news is that you can pick up the book and then grab the deck when it's available (1-2 weeks).

Hi! Thanks for asking, and apologies for the delay. I had an issue with a proof getting held up, and then encountered an error on delivery, so it's been the usual fraught process for me. I'll be sending off again for approval this week, but that's generally a 2-3 week process. So, I probably won't officially launch them until after the holidays.

Really sorry it won't be in time to treat yourself for Christmas.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
