Product Description

In 1976, Bob Bledsaw and Bill Owen went into business as Judges Guild. Their initial offering was centered on a magnificent 22" by 34" map of the City State of Invincible Overlord. First appearing at Gen Con IX, it was sold literally out of the trunk of a car during the convention.

This map launched Judges Guild which began working on even more ambitious project, the Wilderlands of High Fantasy. This became an ambitious project of 18 22" by 17" maps covering a total area 800 miles from west to east, and 1,000 miles from north to south. Each individual map was divided into 5 miles hexes covering an area of 260 miles west to east, and 170 miles from north to south.

Now forty years later those maps have been redrawn in full color. These maps preserves the original detail and applies known errata and corrections. Each was drawn as part of single 6 foot by 8 foot map encompassing the entire Wilderlands then subdivided and cropped.

This isn't the Wilderlands of High Fantasy that I remember. The one I remember had a number of random tables to use when making a hex map.

The Guidebooks were not intended to be reproductions of the original. When I got permission to sell the maps I also asked permission to reprint the data that accompanied the maps. I did not get permission to reprint the tables. But after Robert Bledsaw II saw the first book he was more open to including additional content in subsequent books.

In Fantasy Wilderlands Beyonde, I included poison rules and material from City-State of the World Emperor. Poison was mentioned but not detailed in the original FWB, and Map Six CSWE needed to put somewhere accompanied by some of the regional information in CSWE.

Then starting with Wilderlands of the Magic Realms I started to include more Ready Ref material. But opted for a thematic approach. For Magic Realms the maps were mostly open water. So I opted to include the ships and underwater material.

For Wilderlands of the Fantastic Reaches, I opted to include the Potion and Magic Item Creation rules because of Tula, the City of Wizards...See more

Hi there! Excellent work on this (despite the recent unpleasantness around the company). Just a quick question, is there a reason the extra random tables (such as the ravaged ruins etc) that were in the original aren’t in this version? I feel they add a lot to the Wilderlands experience.

The original charts are in this version because I was focused on just getting the setting portion on. I had to work to convince Bob Bledsaw II to allow me to do the guidebook so I kept it modest. Only adding a single monster to replace something that was never released as open content, a mention of the morkoth.

Then in the second book, Fantastic Wilderland Beyonde, the Judges Guild poisons were mentioned so I asked and got permission to include those rules. By the time of the Wilderlands of the Magic Realm, Bob Bledsaw was pleased at the result to allow me to be more expansive in what I included, so the last two guidebook has considerably more material.

I did exercise some editorial discretion where I reworded and reformatted the material make it part of a coherent whole. But I didn't mess with the actual mechanics or numbers.

The next effect is that unlike the original where the first two supplements has extra material, and the last two do not. It is reversed for this...See more

Ah I see. Thanks for that! It's such a shame. This is an excellent job though despite the situation! :)

I just got this in print. Unfortunately the maps are printed in the USA which is a bummer because of shipping to Europe. Any idea when the complete set of 18 maps with guidebooks may be finished?
That way I can save a bit on combined shipping:-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
