An abandoned landscape, soaked with unresolved histories;
a village, hiding an age-old conspiracy;
a shadowy thing, whispering terrible secrets to children;
a tortured house, playing back the traumas of the past;
a stone circle, where the ley lines meet.

Although you don’t belong here...
although you don’t understand this place...
it was you they wanted all along.

A complete role-playing game for one-shot or prolonged play.

The Shivering Circle has a rules-light, intuitive system designed for quick pick-up horror games and a brief sample setting allowing you to dive into the haunted territories of British folk horror.

The Shivering Circle includes text licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence (CC-BY) allowing you to use it, hack it, and publish it in your own games, both for commercial and non-commercial projects, with due credit.

This is really, really fucking good.
Like, hot diggity damn, this is my jam and I love it. It's just amazingly british and the mechanics look like they'll really work for the ratcheting tension of this style of fiction.
A+, reccomend.

How many people are supposed to play this game?

Page 10 says it is "a fairly traditional tabletop role-playing game, and I'm going to assume that you're familiar with what that is". From that I'm assuming it's a game with 1 GM and 3 to 6 (probably 4 or 5) players, because that's the assumed default for a tabletop role-playing game.

However, elsewhere the book stresses an emphasis on horror through isolation, almost all the inspirational materials in the filmography revolve around single protagonists, and almost all of the examples in the book only talk about one PC. (Page 26 is the only example I could find that refers to a 2nd PC).

I always work on an optimal group of three or four players (in 30 years of playing and running RPGs I have never played with more than four others) + GM but I don't see why you can't have a bigger group. Hunt saboteurs, who never go in alone, spring to mind. Or a group of hikers like the guys from The Ritual, or the cavers from The Descent. You could have a team of social workers, or the staff of a county police force, investigating a ritual murder. A group of country vets. The staff of a farm.

Cool, thanks. Did you know how well is runs with less than that? 1-GM/1-player, say?

One on one it can be really intense with the right combination of people.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
