PALADIN: Warriors of Charlemagne

Watermarked PDF

Enter Medieval Europe Like You've Never Experienced It Before!

Set in medieval Europe, PALADIN weaves together the historical Carolingian events and the medieval epics of The Matter of France into a single chronology!

In PALADIN the players play young Frankish squires or knights in the service of one of Charlemagne's powerful vassals. By going on adventures, the characters will acquire glory and riches, becoming lords of their own lands, building castles, and founding their own family.

Hopefully, the road to fame will lead to the ultimate goal: becoming one of the legendary paladins themselves!

PALADIN is a game for knights. It is based on the standards of knighthood found in the original literature about Charlemagne and the paladins (epics such as Song of Roland, Ogier the Dane, Aymon's Four Sons and more).

PALADIN uses a modified version of the King Arthur Pendragon ruleset, adjusted to fit the themes and elements of Charlemagne's legends.

This is a complete rulebook.

Designed for 5th Edition King Arthur Pendragon. Get the rulebook here.

I also await the hardback physical print version most eagerly. Please say if it will be possible to purchase in any foreseeable future?

Kindest regards, Erik B.

The book will be going to press later this week or early next (so sometime from December 12th--20th, apparently), according to the latest update on the Kickstarter.

When will the hardcover version be released?

It depends on a few things, but based on the latest Kickstarter update, I'd expect it sometime early next year. The remaining steps are final layout for printing (expected to take about two weeks), then just proofing the galleys, printing and distribution to the Kickstarter backers, as I understand it.

Okay, biting the bullet -- does this portray Muslims as the "pagans" of the Chanson de Roland?
Customer avatar

It portrays 'Saracens' as such. The word "Muslim" never appears in the text outside of the Bibliography.

I see. Thank you for your honesty. I will never buy this book, and will do all in my power to discourage others from doing so.

Seriously, is there not other more important things to protest to in these days of Trump and such?

Kindest regards, Erik B.

Why is this such a bad thing?

Could you clarify your issue, do you not like the fact that it portrays them as the historical enemies of the time which they were or the fact they supplement the word with Sarcens?

My issue is that it portrays them, according to something an acquaintance was nice enough to confirm, as worshippers of Jupiter, Apollo and Tervagant. I don't have any problem with them being portrayed as enemies, but I really do object to the repetition of historical slanders. I would have the same objection to a Muslim-focused game that portrayed Christians as polytheists, or one which asserted that the Protocols of the Elders of Zion was an accurate portrayal of what Jews think.

And thats is probably why they are not Muslims. Having actual Muslims as the enemy would result in a backlash by weaponized SJWs calling for its removal because they are offended by a product they would never buy. As has happened before.

Okay I get that you don't want to buy the book, but why would you be discouraging others? What exactly is your objection to the portrayal of Muslims in this book? or Saracens as they are referred to?

So because this portrays a group in the way in which they were viewed by the characters you are supposed to be playing, you object? Maybe historical RPGs aren't for you...

How are people able to leave reviews several months before this game officially came out? Also, this seems kind of interesting. In what ways does it differ from Pendragon? Is it straight historical, or is their magic and stuff in it? If I want to run a straight historical game can I do that?

Preview has been available to Kickstarter backers for a while now.

There are minor mechanical differences from Pendragon, but it’s largely the same system. Like Pendragon, it assumes the same “worldview” as the literature it is based on. So yes, there’s magic and miracles and stuff.

Because it's been funded by a Kickstarter campaign and backers have had it for some time.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
