Miskatonic Country Scenarios: A Keeper's Guide

Agitated in Arkham? Despairing in Dunwich? Indecisive in Innsmouth?

Don't wander the banks of the Miskatonic without this guide to Miskatonic Country scenarios!

Since 1983 Chaosium and its licensees have produced dozens of scenarios set in Lovecraft's fictional Massachusetts towns of Arkham, Dunwich, Kingsport, Innsmouth (and more). This guide helps Keepers pick and chose from these to find the perfect one for their groups and campaigns.

Contents include:

  • Introduction
  • What is Miskatonic Country? - An explanation of what makes up the region and where to look for more information and inspiration.
  • A short bibliography of Miskatonic Country - A discussion of all the books from Chaosium's "Lovecraft Country" series as well as Miskatonic Country-focused scenario collections
  • Miskatonic Country Scenario List - a quick reference list including the scenario titles, source(s), and authors followed by a detailed description of more than 60 published scenarios, covering places visited, entities encountered, and tomes potentially unearthed.
  • Concordances for places, entities and tomes encountered.
  • A bibliography for all the scenarios discussed to help in tracking down specific scenarios as well as a list of scenarios by author.

So if you are new to Cthulhu and want start exploring Miskatonic country or if you're hunting for a specific scenario... or if you're looking for a scenario featurind Deep One hybrids (there are 8), that pay a visit to Christchurch Cemetery in Arkham (there are 4), or let you find a copy of the Eltdown Shards (just one)... this guide has it all.

Currently the guide only covers scenarios regularly published by Chaosium or one of its English-language licensees up through August 2020. No scenarios from magazines, Chaosium's Misktaonic University Library Association (MULAs), or through the Miskatonic Repository are included in this guide. Likewise scenarios set in Miskatonic Country but otherwise outside the "Classic" 1920s/30s era are excluded.  These scenarios will be added in one or more future updates (as well as advice for organizing a campaign using published materials as well as suggestions for creating your own scenarios) assuming their is customer interest. Buyers of the current PDF will receive the updated versions at no additional cost.

Any chance of seeing a POD option soon (or at all)?

Eventually, once we have added at least the scenarios from magazines and a few other more easily available sources, we will add a print option. I don't want to offer a print version before the list of scenarios is complete. I would expect a POD option no sooner than spring.

Dear Sentinel Hill Press,

running a campaign playing in New England and mainly Massachusetts, I immediately bought your new publication, since I am always looking for interesting scenarios and resources.
Many thanks, it's exactly what I was looking for!

I like to run shorter scenarios, with a maximum length of about 3 evening, so here is one suggestion for the already announced upcoming updated version:
For the scenario descriptions: Could you please include an approximate value of how many sessions each scenario is expected to be played in? And maybe the amount of pages, it spans in it original publication?

This would give keepers a notion of which scenarios suit at which situation within their campaign.

Kind regards,

Thanks for buying a copy. We are glad you've found it useful.

Quantifying the number of sessions any scenario might run for a particular group is a challenge; scenarios I have structured to fit into a 4 hour convention slot have been run in a little under 3 hours for one Keeper yet inother groups expand it into 8 or 9 hours of play. So much depends on the Keeper and the players that I hesitate to guess.

For that reason, while we might note particularly short or long scenarios, we have not made an attempt to guess how many sessions (or even hours) it might take the typical group. We have included the page numbering for each scenario in a collection. I might add in the total page length for all the scenarios in a future update to help Keeper's make this sort of determination.

Bret, many thanks for your reply!

After reading your comment, I absolutely agree that it's probably no good idea to try quantifying the duration, a scenario will take to play.

But I'd greatly appreciate if you could mark particularly short or long scenarios, or maybe even add the number of pages.

Since my group and me, we are playing on weekday evenings, only ~2 1/2 hours per session, every second week, at the moment I prefer those shorter scenarios, to give my players as much diversion over time and not staying with the same story over many sessions.
So having some mean to gain a notion, on how long a scenario *might* take, would be handy for me.

Despite of all this, thanks for this very well done publication and keep up the good work!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
