Discover Who Your Hero Was... Before They Were a Hero

Savage Worlds Licensed Product

A Hero Will Rise: Epic Fantasy is the first in a series of Savagely Useful products designed specifically to help players flesh out a background story for their epic fantasy characters in Savage Worlds games. Using a combination of personal choices, random d20 rolls, and draws from a regular card deck, players can determine:

  • Where the hero grew up.
  • What kind of family they were born to.
  • What they did as a trade or profession before adventure came calling.
  • What kind of things happened to them that gave them certain challenges in life.

Using this book, you can not only generate fun and interesting narrative elements for your character, you get special additional abilities and bonuses, as well. In addition, you can use this to generate one or both of your Minor Hindrances, and gain narrative hooks to go with them.

A Hero Will Rise: Epic Fantasy is not only fun to use for creating a fantasy hero character, it can work great as a quick generator for NPCs, as a writing prompt for fantasy writers, and for all kinds of fantasy character-oriented needs.

Are you meant to layer normal character creation on top of the random results or do the edges and skills count against those you would normally start with?

Hey, Joshua. Good question, which I tried to answer right there at the beginning (but was perhaps a bit too vague) -

"It also works to provide some cool added abilities and areas of expertise, giving that 0 XP Novice a little bit more to work with at the start."

So, yes, this layers on top of core creation; you gain some extra stuff, but you still make your character per the normal rules with all of your choices intact.

That was my guess but some of the benefits seemed pretty generous so I just wanted to clarify the intent. Thanks for the quick reply and the great product!

I've been playing lots of one-shot/pick up games with my regular game group lately; it's a good way to find out which setting is a good fit for us. I usually make up some templates to help them ease into a new setting, but I like to leave just enough room for them to customize. This is a great way for them to get that level of customization and randomization in all the fell swoops. Great mix of fantasy tropes, should fit most play styles in fantasy settings. Can't wait to bust it out for the 50 Fathoms game I have planned.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
