Ciphers Made Easy!

Encrypted messages are great for all sorts of game uses: GMs who want to give their players cryptic clues, for instance, or people running escape rooms, convention games, and scavenger hunts who want to puzzle their participants. Even geocachers use ciphers to give clues to caches. Plus, of course, it's just fun! Setting things up properly, though, isn't as much fun. That's what CRYPTER does for you.Crypter main screen

CRYPTER can use three different types of encryption: It can encrypt and decrypt text using letter-shift (Caesar) ciphers, where each letter is shifted a certain number of letters down the alphabet, including the forum spoiler-hiding standard ROT-13. It can use substitution tables, for anything from basic cryptogram puzzles (it can even generate random substitution tables for those!) to using all the many variants on the ubiquitous Pigpen cipher. And if you want something most amateurs can't break without the proper keyword -- which, of course, the players will have to obtain somewhere! -- use a Vigenère cipher, which uses a keyword to encrypt the text and was considered unbreakable for 300 years.

You can also do numerous things to your text after you've encrypted it. For example, you can set the capitalization to 7 different styles, including the odd capitalization at the end of each word necessary for the Sherlock Holmes "Dancing Men" cipher. You can break it into fixed-length code groups, you can reverse the text, you can convert punctuation to spaces, and you can remove both or either. As the example at the bottom of this page shows, doing some of those without even actually encrypting the text can be enough to baffle the amateur.

Plus, of course, it can reverse the process and decrypt anything you provide the proper keyword, substitution table, or shift for.

CRYPTER comes with a 22-page manual that contains an introduction to cryptography, detailed advice on choosing proper difficulty for your players and making secret messages easier or harder to decipher, an extensive glossary of things and people associated with it, several old-time cipher tools to print out, a bibliography with useful references and further reading, and of course full documentation of CRYPTER itself. Not that it needs much, because it is intuitively easy to use.

So that you can use CRYPTER to create all the variants on the Pigpen font -- the one often ascribed to the Freemasons, Civil War spies, the Rosicrucians, and many others -- a copy of the font itself, Pigpen Regular, is included, along with a chart showing four of the variants, substitution tables for all of them, a printable worksheet to set up your own, and a character map for Pigpen, in order to decrypt written versions.

In short, CRYPTER comes with everything you need to include all sorts of mysterious messages of virtually any level of difficulty in your games, all right there in the package.

NOTE: At the moment CRYPTER is only available for Windows, but a Macintosh version is coming soon.

The bottom line on a Linux version is what Embarcadero wants to charge for compilers, specifically the new Delphi upgrade. :( Unless people develop an overwhelming urge to buy thousands and thousands of 1001 Things, it's not looking good in the short term. (of course, long term, DTRPG sales could pick up, Embarcadero could have a sale, or I could win Powerball)

Something you might want to try: Do you have WINE or the equivalent? If so, download TextJiggler -- -- it's free -- and see if it'll run under emulation. If it will, then Crypter will too. It doesn't do anything weird on a system level (unlike, say, TableMaster itself) so there's a good chance that it'll run fine. I know it's not a *good* solution, but it may be better than nothing at all.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
