A Marvelous Roleplaying System

Two Warriors in Glorantha

The book includes everything you need to have to start a campaign in Glorantha: basic overview of the setting; character creation; magic rules for spirit magic, rune magic, sorcery, and Lunar magic; seven complete cult write ups; heroquesting rules and explanations; monster descriptions; themes of Glorantha; and even an introductory adventure that will take your heroes on a heroquest into the Underworld!

A World of Gods, Heroes, and Mythic Fantasy

Glorantha is the most elegant, original, and imaginative fantasy setting since Middle Earth. It is a world of exotic myth and awesome magic, self-contained and unique in its creation. The existence and use of the magical and mythic realms are central to the physics of Glorantha. Here the gods and heroes guard and guide their followers, sharing magics while pursuing their own enigmatic ends.

Glorantha’s detailed cultures, histories, and myths are shaped by gods, heroes, and magic, and yet are plausible and logically self-consistent. Glorantha has been the setting for the Dragon Pass board game, the original RuneQuest roleplaying game, and the award-winning computer game King of Dragon Pass. Glorantha is fully described in the Guide to Glorantha, available from Moon Design Publications.

A Complete Roleplaying Game

HeroQuest Glorantha is the HeroQuest 2 rules system specifically tailored for Glorantha. It presents a simple rules system that allows Game Masters to run games modeled on ancient myth, epic sagas, and tales of high adventure. HeroQuest encourages creative input from players, resulting in an exciting, unpredictable narrative created through group play.

Does this require the Heroquest core rule book, or it playable by itself?

I have it. It's a stand alone RPG. It uses an upgraded version of the HQ 2nd edition ruleset.

How does this system compare to Runequest? How compatible is it with other Chaosium products?

I had typed a more complete reply to this, but it got lost. The short version is, it's quite different and there's no straightforward way at all to convert between the two systems, for example. Because the system is quite narratively-focused and largely eschews detailed stats for anyone but the player characters (and even then the keyword system is very different from a stat-based, percentile system), it's easy to convert pretty much anything from Runequest to Heroquest; stats and a brief description give you more than enough to use in Heroquest. Generally, while all the "fluff", worldbuilding and narrative content in any of the Runequest books will help with running a Heroquest game, my impression is a full character sheet from Heroquest Glorantha will only give you a basic idea what their Runequest character sheet would be like.

That said, the system as a whole is interesting and seems highly appropriate for a game set in Glorantha, though I haven't been able to try it out extensively,...See more

Do the rules presented in this book allow Elder Races as PC’s?

The way character creation works in Heroquest wouldn't preempt playing an Elder Race at all, but there are no specific indications for doing so. It's a system with a strong focus on narrative, so my impression is that you could have Elder Race characters while using the exact same character creation guidelines as presented in the book (which assume human characters). There could be adjustments such as giving more points for character creation, but because of the way keywords and contests work, I'm not sure that would even be necessary. Instead of giving a dwarven character a really high rank in their "Mostali Craftsman" keyword, they could simply consider that using that keyword to create most mundane crafts just results in quite an easy contest. Improving that keyword would result in a better chance of success for things that are difficult for a Mostali craftsman to do (and are relevant to craftsmanship).

Player vs. player contests where one player plays an Elder Race and the other is...See more

Thank you for your reply.

So the system is freeform enough to allow one to portray different races through these keywords and no other system complications are needed. Sounds good.

Does the basic overview of the setting include enough info for a potential new player to learn of the different races from Durulz to Aldryami or is the book so humanocentric that for such players one should look either at one of the old Runequest books or the Guide to Glorantha?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
