Hudson & Brand

The first in Stygian Fox's 'Safe House' series for 7th edition Call of Cthulhu™, Hudson & Brand, Inquiry Agents of the Obscure is an official Cthulhu by Gaslight™ consulting detective agency in the style of extravagant freelancers, such as may be found in the stories of the great Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot. However, instead of being a source for the Investigators to plumb for information whenever the situation gets too tough, or if they need a nudge in the right direction, it is somewhere they can actually inherit, utilise in their own investigations, or use as a safe haven from the outré horrors of the outside world. It is a starting platform, if you will, for adventures into the dark and fog-shrouded streets of Mythos-infested London.

Taking its inspirational cues from The Murders at the Rue Morgue, A Study in EmeraldThis House Is Haunted, and the stories of Sherlock Holmes, the book takes a mature look at the horror of human nature in the capitol of empire and its ability to turn a blind eye to the evil reaches of the Old Ones and their minions.

Inquiry Agents of the Obscure

Chapter 1: The World of Hudson & Brand briefly covers life in Victorian London and includes a timeline of London as well as ideas for running a Cthulhu by Gaslight campaign and new occupations for 1890s' investigators.

Chapters 2-5: The Beginning of the Agency is split into 4 parts, beginning delves into the pasts of Captain Albert Henry Hudson, Ulysses Victor Brand, how they met, and their fateful decision to found the inquiry agency that still bears their names. The following 3 parts details The Early Years, The Prime Years, and The Later Years of the agency, under their stewardship.

The Facade of 33 Golden Square and Maps of Both Floors

Chapter 6: Golden Square & Its Environs covers the agency's physical location, 33 Golden Square, in Soho. A beautifully crafted map of the agency and it's apartment is rounded out with descriptions of the various rooms and resources available to investigators. This chapter also details nearby points of interest, ranging from hospitals and asylums to law enforcement, and even the more mundane necessities such as grocers, transportation, and clubs.

Chapter 7: The Curious Case of Bare-Knuckle Bill is the first of two Cthulhu by Gaslight scenarios. The investigators get an earnest plea for assistance from an urchin who fears his pugilist friend, William Hawthorne, aka 'Bare Knuckle Bill', has been waylaid and may be dying in a ditch somewhere. The case soon reveals itself to be more than a mere missing person case as Fenians, Ruffians, and a mysterious woman all begin to hamper the Investigators inquiries.

Chapter 8: Ophelia Rising, the second scenario, sees the investigators taking a closer look at one of Hudson & Brand's early cases, and investigating the Heliogoland Company and their occult dealings.

Chapter 9: Populating London provides Keepers with a myriad number of heroes and villains, some mundane, and some far more mysterious. Many are named in the case files of the Hudson & Brand agency, while others are presented as potential hooks (or foils) as needed. In addition to the NPCs, various organisations are referred to and a short bestiary of horrors round out the chapter.

Chapter 10: The Weapons of Hudson & Brand provides writeups and stats for the battery of weapons kept at the agency, including several from Hudson's previous life as a Captain in the 42nd (Highland) Regiment of the Foot.

Chapter 11: Artefacts & Curios explores the various baubles and artefacts accumulated by the inquiry agency during Hudson & Brand's 8-year tenure. Some are mundane while others are decidedly more Mythos-related, but all can be used as hooks for further investigations, especially if paired with re-opening some of the agency's earlier cases.

Chapter 12: End Papers and Other Ephemera finishes up the book. This section includes a Victorian-Era map, 6 pages of the Illustrated Thames Sentinel to peruse for possible cases, 10 NPCs written up with "Eye of Light" (good/helpful)/"Eye of Darkness" (antagonist) sides for Keepers to use as they see fit, and lastly, a 2-sided H&B character sheet.

I want to know is the PDF version the same cover to the printed book?
Customer avatar
Chitin P May 22, 2022 11:55 pm UTC
It is not. The PDF version is actually missing the cover, and what you're seeing there is 1-2 pages inside the front cover. I'll let Layout know and we'll get an updated PDF up on DTRPG.

The description contains a lot of odd grammar and typos indicating someone who speaks English as a second language. Has the book itself been edited by someone who speaks English natively?

I don't want to assume their mother tongue, but the editor is a proficient English speaker. Blame the typos on gremlins/rat-things!

Just to be sure: is this book for the 7th edition?
Best regards,

Yes. All of Stygian Fox’s CoC titles are for 7th edition.

Only just popped by here out to check some details and as the Robert Grayston who helped make Hudson & Brand a reality, some of these comments are making me swoon a little (in the "overcome by strong positive emotion" way). Thank you!

Perhaps I should have Markham fetch me the smelling salts and then I'll be right as rain before we head out to investigate this "Green Gang" I've heard so much about...

Is there a Roll20 friendly map of the Hudson and Brand offices? Might be planning on using this for a Masque of the Red Death game.

Is there a discount if you have already purchased the pdf version? Thanks!
Customer avatar
Chitin P January 29, 2021 12:38 pm UTC
Hi Johnathan. Short Answer: No, unfortunately. Long Answer: We'd love to be able to discount the POD price by the purchase price of the PDF, but it simply isn't possible. DTRPG takes 30-35% of the the selling price, so two sales results in the 30-35% going away twice. Using this title as an example, The PDF would sell for $19.95 and the publisher receives either $12.96-$13.96 (and depending on their contracts with those who helped make the book, it could be less, as assigned royalties also need to be paid). For POD sales, DTRPG subtracts the cost of the printing before taking their 30-35% fee. For H&B, that print cost is $22.84, meaning the publisher receives $27.11 and then either $8.13 or $9.48 comes out for the 30-35%, taking it down to less than the cost of the PDF (so if we discounted the PDF price from the POD as two separate transactions, we'd not making any money at all on the POD.)

is the premium edition full bleed?
Customer avatar
Chitin P November 22, 2020 2:17 pm UTC
The ink goes edge-to-edge.

Any Full-Color POD option for DTRPG requires the following Bleed: Graphics and art intended to print to the edge of a page should bleed a full 0.25” past the final trim Color Interior Specs and Info size (except on the bind side). If an image used does not provide for enough bleed (full 0.25”), please extend a complimenting color the full amount of bleed required.

Fantastic supplement, has enough to start a Gaslight Cthulhu campaign set in London/England, it has new occupations, weapon stats, etc. Additionally, it presents Hudson & Brand, a duo that harkens to Sherlock Holmes & Watson, giving you a great starting point for investigations into obscure mysteries. I highly recommend it, as well as Spirits of London and their Thorston setting.

Thanks Auraboros G! We definitely try to make sure that all of our Gaslight titles work well with Hudson & Brand.

Just wondering but is there anything like this for modern day London?
Customer avatar
Chitin P November 22, 2020 2:21 pm UTC
Not that I've seen, although there's nothing to stop someone from updating Hudson & Brand to a modern setting for their own personal games. That said, we are at work on a Modern-Era Safehouse book (set in Washington D.C.), and I know Chaosium announced a new product line based on Ben Aaronovitch's "Rivers of London" books.

In my view, absolutely worthwhile, what you get here for the price. Beautifully made and inspiring.

Especially when you consider what costs, for example, an evening in the cinema today.

I bought the black and white book in the crowdfunding for 33.73 USD. And now they sell it for $ 27. Why?

My copy of Hudson and Brand came in the mail today, I ordered it off of RPGnow. It looks awesome, love the maps that look like they have creases from heavy use. I still wish I did not have cancel my pledge during that Kickstarter, it would have been worth if I could have afforded at the time. If you want an awesome setting for your players, I would suggest buying a copy, if you have not bought one as of yet. I also suggest getting the Hardcover Color Book (Premium Heavyweight) (8.5" x 11"), it's worth the price. The pages are beautiful and you can tell a lot of love and care went into creating this work of art.

What are the differences between the various downloads?
Customer avatar
Tyler O February 21, 2018 12:23 am UTC
I'm sorry but I'm not sure I'm positive what you're asking - are you talking about Lens of Darkness? Or just the PDFs above?
Customer avatar
Jackson M February 21, 2018 3:06 am UTC
I'm asking about the PDFs above. I assume v. 5 is the most up to date one, but it's missing the "Thirteen" section of v. 4.

I'm just wondering what the differences are between them and whether there are more updates to come that would include the "Thirteen".

Basically, I want to know if there is going to be one complete definitive download for this product.

Will this book be available in print? (Please say yes...) If so, how soon?

Hey - I'm not the amazing lead on this book, but I saw on Facebook that there were grapplings with how to make that a reality, but it is still in progress.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
