In 1976, Bob Bledsaw and Bill Owens went into business as Judges Guild. Their initial offering was centered on a magnificent 34" by 44" map of the City State of Invincible Overlord. First appearing at Gen Con IX, it was sold literally out of the trunk of a car during the convention.

Now forty years later that map has been redrawn in full color. It preserves all the original detail while adding new ones like rocks, foot paths, trees, and shrubbery. This has been checked against the no-name city blueprint that was the first draft of the map. This helped to clarify details obscured by the offset printing process used in the 1970s.

This map is not a scanned image of the original but has been redrawn from scratch.

This product contains several versions of the map.

  • A vector based PDF with layers at 22" by 34"
  • A bitmap based PDF at 22" by 34"
  • A jpeg of the map with building labels and legends removed suitable for Virtual Tabletop software.
  • Instructions for using the VTT map with Roll20
  • A 17" by 14" map with the city arranged in its correct location on the original 5 mile hex map published on the back of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy.
  • A PDF with overlapping sections of the full map suitable for printing on letter size paper.
  • A PDF  with a letter sized black and white only map suitable for taking notes on during a campaign.

The print option adds the following:

  • Four overlapping full scale maps of each quarter of the map.
  • One with the map reduced to fit the 12" by 18" poster.

This product is a authorized Judges Guild release for the Wilderlands of High Fantasy.

This product only contains color maps of the City State of the Invincible Overlord. The original guidebook and map can be purchased from Judges Guild on RPGNow/DriveThruRPG.

Hi Bob! Does this product still have the text of the original entries formatted as notes on the map? On your blog post dated Feb 3, 2019 you wrote that just hovering or clicking over a named location will cause the text to appear.

Thanks!

Yes and the file you need is this one.
CSIO_Keyed_via_Stickies.zip

Note I heard some people had trouble getting them to appear so I suggest starting with Acrobat Reader. And the text included focuses on the individual buildings.

Also I recommend having the comment pane open in case you can't quite nail where the sticky is.

I'm currently setting up to run a Roll20 game using your maps. I'm finding that I can safely use a much larger scale without performance issues. I've tested with 12 times the resolution of the original VTT jpeg (for a 10 ft Roll 20 square size), but would like to try the insanity of 24 times the resolution (for a 5 ft Roll20 square size). Would it be possible to get a higher resolution VTT JPEG to support this ridiculous scaling on my part?

Sure just give me the size in pixels you want.

73,920 pixels wide by 107,520 pixels tall would get a 5 ft Roll20 square size. If that's unreasonable, 36,960 x 53,760 would get a 10 ft square in Roll20. Thank you.

Ignore my previous comments/request. I managed to overlook that Roll20 has an upload limit of 5 MB (10 MB for Pro & Plus users). I knew I had to be missing something.

They are for your reference. Think of them as house numbers. They threw me back in the day as well and it took me a while to spot the pattern. Later when I talked to Bob Bledsaw Senior about them, he confirmed my guess.

I would really like a Judge's Map sectioned, similar to the Player Map sectioned (6x5). Any possibility? I would pay cash-money for one. :)

sectioned into separate 6" by 5" maps?

No. But I can see how you could think that I meant that. Rather, I would like a Judge's Map sectioned like City_State_of_the_Invincible_Overlord_Player_Map_Sectioned.pdf. That map is sectioned into 8.5x11 (portrait) parts, 5 across and 6 down, for a total of 30 sheets.

Truly outstanding work, by an acknowledged master of fantasy cartography. True to the originals, with improved graphics and all the little extras needed to play the City State properly. The keyed sticky note version of the map is a fantastic aid to any GM -- thanks and a hat tip to it's creator!

This is magnificent. I've got the VTT version in Roll20. It's beautiful, and infinitely usable once you get used to the scale. I expect keying it to take most of the weekend, but this is actually a fantastic way to prep. I've found several things I didn't notice when I ran this when it first came out--old things, not the changes in the new edition. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I'll be more pleased when Bat in the Attic comes out with a VTT map of the underground areas, but you can't have everything. Well done, guys!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
