Hex Kit is a desktop application for building hex maps to be used with table top role playing games. Rather than being bogged down by complicated functions, Hex Kit is built to be intuitive and quick to use with an emphasis on art.

Features:

  • Multi Platform: Hex Kit runs native on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
  • Simple to Use: It has just the right tools you need to quickly put together a detailed map, as well as a few tools for displaying your map at the table.
  • Detail Variation: No need to hand pick each tile as you build your map; pick a hex style and the software randomizes the selection as you click and drag across the canvas. Tiles can be rotated and flipped with just a few mouse clicks as well. If you find the painting too broad, you can also select individual tiles.
  • Player Facing Display: Hex Kit has a display mode that shows your map in a separate window; drag it to a second screen or show it on a projector. You can hide parts of the map with fog of war and reveal the map as needed. Changes made in paint mode update in the display window in real time. Did your players burn that village down? Delete it from the map, and it's gone.
  • Store Information: You can store a label with a description for each hex directly in the map.
  • Custom Tiles: Hex Kit comes with a small selection of old school themed, black & white tiles that you can use to get started. You can create and import your own tiles, purchase and install official tile sets illustrated by CONE team members, install tile sets from 3rd parties, or even cobble together tiles made from images found around the internet!
  • Export: Hex Kit will export your map as a PNG file that you can print or even use with a virtual table top.
  • Random Maps: If you're in a hurry, or just want to goof off, you can generate a random map and then edit it to fit your needs. You can even save your generator to use again later.
  • Internal API / Plugin Support: Hex Kit boasts in interal API; users willing to dig in to a little bit of JavaScript can create, run, and share plugins to get an extra mile out of Hex Kit.
  • Support For Both Orientations: Hex Kit now supports tiles that either have points up or faces up.
More Tiles: Hex Kit comes packed with classic, black & white tiles out of the box. Additional, full color hand illustrated tiles can be purchased downloaded here in our DTRPG store.

Installation: Installing Hex Kit is easy: download the zip file or dmg and extract it wherever you want. All you have to do is open the executable and you'll be making maps in no time. When updating to a new version of Hex Kit, simply download the new version and override the old one.

Terms of Use: By purchasing or downloading Hex Kit you agree to utilize Hex Kit art assets for personal use only unless given permission from Cone Of Negative Energy by means of a commercial license agreement. The Hex Kit software and all official Hex Kit art assets are copyright 2017 Cone Of Negative Energy. Full and expanded legal terms included with download. For tutorials and more information, visit hex-kit dot com.

NOTE: The Hex Kit desktop application only comes with black and white tiles; full color tiles are additional purchases. This version of the Hex Kit desktop app is the exact same version available in other marketplaces.

NOTE 2: I cannot help you with bugs or issues on this page or in the comments section. To solve whatever problem you might have you will need to navigate to the CONE website and email me your issue along with your operating system and the version number of Hex Kit you are using, and a screenshot of the error. I apologize for this, but to make sure things go well we need to exchange things that DTRPG has disabled in the comments section.

Hello, everyone! I've generated a few maps with this and really love it, but there's a weird freeze: after I open a Hex Kit file I have previously saved, I cannot zoom in or out, cannot pan the map in the view window, nor can I modify the file in any way!
Has anyone else encountered this?

What’s a good thing to run this with after I’ve downloaded it?

I purchased this product from itch.io because I stumbled on it there. Didn't realize it was for sale here. Don't try to use this product if you're on Linux. I cannot get it to work and cannot get a response to requests for assistance from the author.

Probably a stupid question, but my legalese is weak.

Am I able to include maps that I make in Hex Kit in my own commercial RPG releases, or is that a copyright violation?

I'm stoked to use this product on my Western Marches games. I'm curious about one of the listed features:

"Store Information: You can store a label with a description for each hex directly in the map."

Does this feature enable keying each Hex? I infer from the wording to mean it does, but I was hoping you could confirm. What kind of information can be stored and in what ways can this information be displayed? I'd like to make Hex-maps with Hex-keys like those by Save vs Total Party Kill. Is that a feasible process within this software, or should I expect to create a separate sheet/doc to input summary for Hexes.

The pointy up hex orientation is an odd choice.
all my other hex map utilities are flat side up, so importing hexes is difficult,
there isn't a "flat top" template available either.
.
Better support for "flat top" hexes please!

Cecil,

Good product.

I'd like 'flat top' to be better supported; unless I want parchment/pirate maps I'm at a disadvantage here, and if I'm doing faux pirate maps, I'm not using hexes. Please consider even a simple B&W flat top set included going forward.

Overlays: is there a way to move/slide or scale the overlays? I'm trying to put a color-coded political layer over the map, and I can't find anyway to manipulate it. I keep re-sizing it in my image editor, but no matter what I do, it's not covering the very top or very bottom of the map.

Is there the ability to move the layers up and down in the stack, change the order of them?

Hi Cecil. Two super basic questions on Linux because there are no instructions I can find.

1) Do I just unpack the Hotfix version (HexKit-Linux-64BIT-2.0.5-hotfix.zip) and use it, or do I need to copy the Hotfix version over the regular version (HexKit-Linux-64BIT-2.0.5-hotfix.zip)?

2) I am using a Chromebook and trying to run this in a Linux container. How do I start the program? I assumed that 'Hex Kit' is the executable, but when I issue the command 'Hex-Kit' , it says command not found. This is true even after I changed permissions to make it executable.

Thank you.

the hot fix version of linux is for folks with a harfbuzz issue, and the regular one is for other linux folks, they are both the same thing except for that one difference (we're working on reaching parity as we speak). if one works for you, you don't need the other. also, i am not sure about linux containers and chromebooks—chrome OS is not an operating system we support but if you're running it in a container you might be able to use " chmod +x ./Hex Kit "

Much appreciated. I was able to change permissions on that file just fine (except I had to put single quotes around 'Hex Kit'). I just can't execute 'Hex Kit' for some reason.

No worries, I can use the Mac version until I figure this out.

With help, I figured it out. I had to issue the command in this fashion (from within the Hex Kit folder):

./HexFORWARDSLASH Kit

And then it worked. 'Hex Kit' or HexFORWARDSLASH Kit by itself wasn't enough. You need the ./ at the beginning, too, otherwise it looks through PATH for the Hex Kit folder and it's not in PATH.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
