Orange Hack

These rules assume a basic familiarity with traditional RPGs. There is a GM, each player plays a single character, roll dice to attempt actions, etc. A debt of gratitude is owed to the granddaddy of all RPGs, as well as its various rules-light hacks, most especially Black Hack and Microlite20.

Orange Hack:

- Uses a 3-stat system (STR, DEX, INT)

- Contains 6 classes with their own abilities and spell lists (where applicable)

- Uses d20 plus bonus against AC for combat

- Uses roll under stat for skill checks

- Uses the advantage/disadvantage system

- Manges inventory using usage dice

- Has no XP tracking, all leveling is session-based

- Is simple in structure, with the rules primarily based on the items and spells themselves

- Embraces GM fiat and on-the-fly rulings

FYI to the author - I'm all but certain that the Advantage/Disadvantage mechanic didn't make it into the new OGL for 5E. Therefore you wouldn't be able to use it here - or if you did, you'd have to rename it something else, at the very least.

Thanks for your interest and input! I certainly don't want to step on anyone's copyright toes.

However, Advantage and Disadvantage are also used in Black Hack and the mechanic and terms also predate D&D 5E, so I'm not overly concerned about that aspect.

I apologize, I was wrong. I had been reading over material from a 5E release that predated the full 5E OGL, where they'd gone with "tactical advantage/tactical disadvantage" and explained why. I went back and re-read the new SRD/OGL, just to make sure they weren't confining the use of "advantage/disadvantage" to 5E-specific material, and looks like you are safe.

As to your product itself, I'm tempted to pick it up after reading the previews. I play and sometimes run in Adventurers League, the official 5E organized play program, but want something simpler when running for my kids. I started each of my boys at 7 (oldest now 11), as I myself played my first game (I6 Ravenloft!) at 10, and I couldn't wait any longer ;) But both appear to have aspirations of DMing, and when my younger son is picking his adversary out of my minis box, I know I have to be running even more on the fly than normal! Only thing holding me back in your description is rolling under for skill checks; I also...See more

Funny you should say that, as one of my initial goals here was to remove the roll-under aspect as it seems so non-intuitive.

For combat, it's basically "roll d20 and add your level" against AC of your target (with ranged getting an additional to hit bonus and melee getting a damage bonus based on DEX and STR respectively).

So it would be very possible to tweak this and assign a "target value" to a skill check and simply do the same thing. However, the simplicity of skill checks being "identify the stat used, roll under your stat, possibly with advantage/disadvantage" ended up winning out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
