Outbreak: Undead 2nd Edition - Survivors Guide

Watermarked PDF

THE NEXT CHAPTER to the AWARD WINNING Zombie Survival Simulation RPG!

Outbreak: Undead.. is the ENnie award-winning RPG that first premiered at GenCon 2010 as the very first Zombie Survival Simulation RPG. The game debuted to a wide audience gaining popularity with both Role Players as well as the Zombie/Survivalist community, obtaining a 'PLATINUM SELLER' status on DTRPG

Over 7 years ago we told people YOUR ZOMBIE SURVIVAL PLAN WILL FAIL, and asked you to PROVE US WRONG. Many of you did, but CAN YOU SURVIVE the next stage?

The stuttering of the generator shakes the machine violently, its last bit of gas rings in the background, while the lights flicker as you enter the sub-basement of the hospital. You came here looking for antibiotics, but there is something else here...
The stuttering of the generator shakes the machine violently, its last bit of gas rings in the background, while the lights flicker as you enter the sub-basement of the hospital. You came here looking for antibiotics, but there is something else here...

Outbreak: Undead.. is Survival Horror simulation-based RPG, focusing on practical experience - and scarcity of resources rather than sensationalist hero fulfillment. The game asks you not ‘IF’ you are going to die, but ‘WHEN’.

St. Louis in Ruins...St. Louis in Ruins...

What do we mean by 'Survival Simulation RPG'?

Outbreak: Undead is a sandbox system, with no real 'pre-established world building or lore' - players can create highly adaptable mission frameworks. Allowing for any kind of Survival Horror Apocalypse (slow, fast, sentient, biologically alive), in any kind of environment(urban, arctic, jungle, swampland), and take place in any kind of setting (divergent history, modern day, near future, fandom worlds) you can imagine.

Whats New?

The first edition had a lot of great elements baked into its design. But it also fell short in some respects. So with 2nd Edition, our focus is to:

  • Expand in DETAIL the rules of the game in both a Survivors Guide for Players, as well as a Game Masters Guide for the aspiring GM.
  • Earn SURVIVAL POINTS as players, while generating RISK that the GM's have access to create unbiased obstacles.
  • Provide example scenarios in the form of our STRAIN SERIES.
  • Make OPPONENTS that are the perfect fit for your players worst nightmares.
  • Play the game at a level of REALISM that is most intriguing to your group.
  • Use players GESTALT (practical experience) to zero in on what makes players special.
  • Run group TACTICS, and wisely use COMPETENCE POINTS to give you the best odds at survival.
  • Continue to expand on our proprietary SPEW-AI (Strength, Perception, Empathy, WIll - Assessment Inventory, an online 30 Q personality test), so you can play YOURSELF as a character with confidence.

Survival Horror at its core...

Like all trends, zombies come and go through our collective consciousness as excellent titles by talented people are drowned out by the wave of product just trying to capitalize on the trend.

Outbreak: Undead.. wants to focus on the PASSION of the STORY, as the best horror stories aren't about ZOMBIES, but instead SURVIVING A WORLD where we are no longer IN CONTROL.

Outbreak: Undead isn't just about fighting the Zombies/Infected - it's about:

  • Scarcity of Resources
  • Opposition of Nature and Man
  • Stories of Individual Struggles peppered with Hope

It's about surviving in a world where THE ODDS ARE AGAINST YOU.

So in Outbreak: Undead.. you will be TELLING YOUR STORY of success and failure using resources generated by your practical skills. Degrees of Success and Degrees of Failure will either generate ACTIONS in combat, or LABOR in survival situations.

Levels of Realism:

While Outbreak: Undead.. is very much a test of wills, and the odds are often stacked against you - we understand it's still a game. So in 2nd Edition, we've broken the rulebook into THREE LEVELS OF CRUNCH.

The GREEN HIGHLIGHTS in the book will give you the basics of the system. While YELLOW will give you additional rules for realism. RED is for the players who are looking for a truly brutal survival experience.

Every level of difficulty allows you to integrate it into the others. So you could have a table with GREEN HORNS, TESTED INDIVIDUALS, and TRUE SURVIVALISTS all at the same time!

Strongholds: Live Together Or Die Alone

One of the unique features of Outbreak: Undead.. is the use of Strongholds and the foundation for your survival adventure. Strongholds allow players to make their games more than just a run-hack-n-slash affair, exploring interpersonal relationships and understanding what makes a society tick.

Beyond just finding safety in numbers, characters will have the opportunity to establish governmental bodies in order to manage and direct the communities they form, develop a working economic system that makes use of supply and demand, and establish a variety of relations with other groups that may also be out there in the apocalypse.

Do the rulebooks include the information that the cards have? As in the trait and equipment cards? I'm trying to see what I need to buy to be able to play online with some friends

Are you having difficulty finding copies at your FLGS or via RenegadeGames?

Ah. I lamely assumed this was a DriveThru only product. My fault. I found them on the Renegade site. Thanks for the nice reply. :)

This is a stupid question, but is this the 'core' book with everything I need to run a game? I'm a little late to the party and there's such a wealth of great looking literature to accompany the game, that I'm a little overwhelmed.

Not a stupid question at all! The "Survivors" handbook is like the equivalent of buying the D&D players handbook, it has all the main rules you need to get started - but it's not the 'entire package'. The "Game Masters Guide" is an excellent resource for GMs' who are looking to run a game of Outbreak: Undead and use all the tool in the tool chest!

Is there a way I can remove some of the watermarks? They're just giant black boxes that cover up the text, making some parts of the book unreadable.

Under the disadvantages aggression coping mechanism says add a difficulty per tier for time 1d0 per tier was this supposed to be 1d6 or 1d10? Page 52 it says the same for both my physical copy and digital copy.
Customer avatar
Alex H July 02, 2019 6:11 am UTC
That should just read Time 1 per Tier.

Purchased this and the Gamemaster's Manual. Some questions - how do you determine how many competence points the characters start with? Or what outbreak level a scenario is ?
Customer avatar
Alex H June 18, 2019 6:49 am UTC
Competence Points and how characters generally get them is covered on page 60 of this Survivor's Guide (there are a couple options available for this). As for the Outbreak Level, published Scenarios will set this generally, but it is essentially up to the GM and the Scenario they have constructed (though again, there are some options in how you can approach this).

Is there a reason the character sheet is listed as fillable and isn't?
Customer avatar
Ivan V October 28, 2019 7:35 pm UTC
Hey Nicholas,

For some reason when we upload the fillable file, DTRPG is compressing it in a way we cannot seem to recover. Our local file works, but it's not translating to the product page for some reason.

In the meantime, we recommend you download it from our website at

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Just a quick question: on page 15 of the Survivor's Guide it mentions that there are play mats and character logs to go along with the character sheets at but I can't find these anywhere, have they not been posted on the website yet or have they possibly been taken down? Just curious as I feel like they could be fairly helpful (even if not essential).
Customer avatar
Alex H March 19, 2019 6:06 pm UTC
Hey Travis, the Play Mat hasn't been released yet so you aren't missing out. As for the Logs, those are explained in the SG, but they are something you would make yourself.

Reilly O December 29, 2018 3:52 am UTC
Hi, I have a huge problem and I can't find any way to fix it. I recently bought the Outbreak: Undead 2nd Edition - Survivors Guide off of Amazon. My problem is that I have none of the materials to play the game. I can't find the dice or any other materials we need to play the game. I searched far and wide for the materials, and the only thing I see with them is the Starter Kit. The thing is, everywhere I look, the starter kit is "Out of print." This is my first time with an RPG, so I don't have any supplies for the the game of my own. I just need to know where I can buy the supplies I need to play.

Thanks for your help.
Customer avatar
Alex H February 27, 2019 9:59 pm UTC
Hey Reilly, sorry for the delay in response. The only materials you need in order to play are some dice, specifically two d10s and some d6s in four colors so you can make dice pools. It doesn't require any of the mentioned extras or the custom dice (there are details in the book for using normal d6). That said, all of the accessories are not yet on sale as they are currently in production along with the physical copies of the Gamemaster's Guide. Once they are finished being made they'll become available for sale.

Anyone have experience of running/playing O:U on VTT? If so how did you go about it?

A couple of friends and I have been ramping up a game using Tabletop Simulator. We like 3d maps. That said, I looked at a few others and TTS is just the right way to go for us. roll20 is probably also a good one to get up and running quickly.

The biggest challenges, so far, have been a combination of learning the rules of the game and setting up the table to make it as easy as possible to run/play.

I did a number of things to keep the rules at hand for easy lookup. Copy/paste all of the equipment, for example, that you are going to use in a session. You will probably want to have a separate character sheet for the stronghold. I brought in the GM screen for ease of use. Counters for things like depletion points are handy. I grabbed a ton of miniatures made from the Left for Dead series and 3d map bits.

I created a bunch of dice trays and counters for NPCs/Zombies so I can roll all of their pools at once. This right here is something I see as a potential problem no matter how...See more

I purchased this game and wanted to leave a review but can’t because I didn’t buy it from here. So my review of the game is it’s absolutely amazing. The game is an in depth survival game but the gameplay is streamlined and very easy to pick up. I can’t wait for the Gamemasters guide to see what else is added to the game!

Hello Ivan,

May I know if the GM Guide you mentioned here and the GM Companion 2nd Edition - Early Access the same?

I am interested to buy. Please advice. Thank you.
Customer avatar
Alex H October 21, 2018 8:35 am UTC
They are not completely the same, but they are similar. The GM Companion is the early look at some of the content coming in the GM Guide, but the GM Guide will be further updated and contain a load more content as well. The GM Companion is great for getting games up and running now.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
