Amazing Tales is a roleplaying game, written to be played by children aged four and over together with their parents. With your child you will create an amazing tale, in about the time it takes to read a bedtime story.

EN World described Amazing Tales as "perfect for its target audience and a great first time RPG."

BoingBoing said "a huge smash hit"

The GMs Table said "if you have kids I'd suggest it"

Your child invents a hero, and decides what they will do at every step, while you conjure up a world of adventure. At key moments the dice will decide if the hero succeeds.

In the book you will find

The short and simple Amazing Tales rules. So simple a four year old will be able to explain them. Flexible enough to cope with the most imaginative requests.

Advice on creating Amazing Tales with your child. Covering the specific challenges of making up stories that work for kids, different ways of handling fights in children's games and ways to keep magic magic.

Four sample settings for Amazing Tales, each with suggested characters and skills, tips for story tellers and ten story seeds - ideas just waiting to become Amazing Tales.

The settings are...

The Deep Dark Wood: In the Deep Dark Wood you will find trees that move by themselves, animals that talk, and fairies who look after the forest. Enter the woods as a fairy, or a talking animal.

Magical Kingdoms Long Ago: In the magical kingdoms you will find kings and queens, warriors and wizards, dragons, unicorns and giants. Explore the kingdoms as a prince or princess, witch or wizard, knight or explorer.

Pirate Seas: The Pirate Seas are an exciting and dangerous place. Set sail as a pirate to hunt for treasure, explore forgotten islands, befriend the mermaids, fight seas monsters, and brave the wild blue yonder.

Adventures Beyond the Stars: Far beyond Planet Earth lies a world of adventure. Gleaming spaceships voyage from planet to planet, man meets alien, robots talk, and a universe awaits to be explored. Take to the stars as a space ranger, robot, alien, or scientist.

Amazing Tales can be played with a single six sided dice. But a set of four dice with six, eight, ten and twelve sides are recommended.

Amazing Tales was written to be played sitting at a table, curled up on a sofa or snuggled up in bed by a parent and one or two children.

Amazing Tales lets your children make up any kind of character they want, such as aliens, robots, dinosaurs, fairies, knights, cowboys or superheroes. Amazing Tales was also designed to require no preparation on the parent's side. If your children are in the mood for a game you can grab the dice and get started.

The 96 page hardback book features 28 pages of full colour illustrations and is embellished with black and white line drawings throughout. Perfect for sharing with adventurous children to inspire their adventures.

Amazing Tales is available as a pdf, standard and premium hardback. What's the difference between standard and premium? Premium printing is slightly glossier with richer colour. Standard looks just fine.

If the PDF format was purchased, can it be downloaded to more than one computer or device? I ordered the standard hardcover as well as the PDF for my 5 yr. old & 10 yr. old's Christmas. The website said the hardcover likely won't arrive by Christmas, so I'm curious if I'd be able to download the PDF on multiple devices like their tablets and a computer?

Which dice are needed to play?

Recommended is D6, D8, D10 and D12. But there is a variant in the rules that needs only a D6.

Purchaser here, and love the game. But is there any way you could post the story / character sheets without the brown background, perhaps as a download on your site?

The shading eats up a lot of ink I'd rather fill with adventure doodles.

Thanks in advance!

Hi. I'm wondering if a parent that has never done rpg could figure out how to do this with their kids? (Does it explain how to play an RPG game, or is that background knowledge expected?) Also, I don't understand the difference between the various versions. If I get the "watermark version" will I be able to play it?

A PDF is a digital copy. If you get the watermarked PDF of course you can play the game, but you will not get a physical book, you will have to read the PDF on a computer, phone, or tablet.

"Watermarked" just means they're going to put something like your customer name and an order number in a corner of each page. It doesn't affect readability; they plan for this when laying them out. It's just so that if someone pirates the game, they can figure out who did it.

How to run and play an RPG is both very simple and instinctive for most people once they try, and also a little difficult to explain. You could watch videos of some people playing RPGs on youtube or the like (Critical Role is extremely popular) if you read the book and still aren't sure what to do. No prior knowledge is necessary, though, and this game is very entry-level.

Hi Eric,

I worked hard to try and make the game accessible for parents who haven't played RPGs before. I hope I succeeded. And there are videos on the Amazing Tales youtube channel to show how the game goes.

Also, I've heard of another RPG for young kids but it seems to pretty much require things to be solved by violence. I'd expect some violence in an RPG, but I'd like to encourage other ways of solving problems. Maybe even adventures where violence would not make sense.

Hi Charles, Amazing Tales has no specific rules for combat. While combat certainly can happen, so can anything else and it was written with that in mind. Roleplaying your way past challenges, befriending enemies, solving puzzles and dealing with natural hazards, like storms, earthquakes and herds of migrating dragons should all be part of the mix.

What age range is this suggested for?

Hi Charles, it's aimed at ages 4 and up. That's a rough guide. If a child can follow a bedtime story for 20 minutes and deal with numbers up to 12, they should be fine.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
