The Frontier

Watermarked PDF

Burn, slash, cut, incinerate, shoot, maul, vaporise, maim, slaughter, electrocute, rend, blast and disintegrate your way through The Frontier!

Inspired by action roleplaying games, such as Borderlands and Destiny, The Frontier is a sci-fi game of hi-octane action that focuses on the simpler pleasures of life. Explore the alien ruins of a faraway world, fight a ton of nasties and baddies, and collect a boatload of loot as your reward!

  • Create intricate characters with complex personalities, then go shoot bad guys in the face and take their stuff!
  • Guns, guns, guns! A multitude of unique weapons and armor, each with several different randomly-determined variants. Guns that shoot fire. Guns that shoot rockets. Rockets with guns. Even the occasional gun that shoots bullets!
  • Includes an exciting post-apocalyptic setting, complete with an introductory scenario to get you straight into the action. Don't like that - no sweat! The setting is completely optional and easily replaced by your own creation.
  • Uses a simple game system with old school sensibilities to keep things moving at a smooth pace. If you’ve ever played a d20-based game, you already know how to play!
  • Extensive Gamemaster advice on how to create and run campaigns. I took all that crap out to make room for more guns!

The Frontier doesn't stop with the corebook! There are already several Frontier sourcebooks available, each with new character classes, monsters, gear and other goodies!

Try before you buy: Not sure if this is your cup of tea? The Frontier Starter Edition allows you to examine the game's rules and run characters up to 3rd level for free!

i love this game to death ever sense the first edition was free and am overjoyed by how it has grown.

Can you update the Digital Edition at some point? it is very, very useful to have.

Hello Ben,

I will continue to grow the game as much as I can. As for the digital edition, unfortunately this has been quietly retired as it was taking too much of my time to update. It was basically a choice between writing new material or adding to the digital edition and I picked writing new material.

I understand. It must be a pain checking hundreds of links. Thank you for getting back to me!

Quick question, do ammo and rations take up inventory slots? The design of the character sheets seems to indicate they don't, but I couldn't find an exception in the rules?

Also, any chance of an expanded character sheet at some point? Could use a second page for notes/class features/equipment properties.

I remember dabbling in the prototype for this, so I'm keen to give it a go with the finished product!

Ammo and rations take up 1 inventory slot like any other item. It's just a bit easier to keep track of them by ticking boxes on the character sheet.

For the expanded character sheet, I'll see what I can do!

The onepkg is super helpful but cannot be opened on a Mac.
Can you provide an alternative format which is macOS friendly please?

Hello Gideon,

Unfortunately this is a limitation of the free versions of OneNote - the onepkg file format can only work with the OneNote included with Office. I do not have a Mac myself but I will see if I can do something in a wiki-like HTML format. This is going to take some time however.

Hello again Gideon,

Just a heads-up: I think I have found a way to generate a HTML based version of the digital edition that will be even better than the OneNote format and of course usable in any computer that has a browser. I also intend to put all the information contained in the various sourcebooks that have been released so far, so that you'll have all the stuff in one location.

I'm still inputting and formatting the information, but if you are interested in a sneak preview send me an email and I'll send you what I've got so far.

The new update to the game contains a hyperlinked PDF file that replaces the Onenote version. It contains all the information in the core book as well as all supplements released so far. It works really great on a computer screen, even better on a tablet.

I feel like I missed it but are there guidelines to the amount of loot that players should acquire from their quests or combats?

Hi Brian,

There aren't any guidelines as to the amount of loot. I just hand out whatever feels fair to me.

Is there a chance of a print one of this (or maybe a compiled omnibus?)

Hi Alan,

I haven't planned a printed edition for the near future (still getting to grips with the whole DIY publishing thing). It is certainly possible that I'll get to it sometime next year after I had some time to finalise all of the little detains and errata in the core edition.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
