Investigate Mythos mysteries in 1920s NYC’s Harlem Renaissance!
An RPG sourcebook for Call of Cthulhu and GUMSHOE.

New York City in the 1920s: Prohibition is in full swing, and bootleggers are living high. African Americans flee the oppressive South for greener pastures, creating a new culture in Harlem. The music of Fats Waller and Duke Ellington pours out of the city’s windows and doorways, and the sidewalks are crowded with women in stylish skirts with silk stockings, and men in white gloves and Chesterfield coats. There’s a feeling of possibility in the air, like never before. But even in this land of promise, Harlem is a powder keg. While classes and cultures collide, Lovecraftian horrors lurk beneath the streets, creeping through dark alleys and hidden doorways into the Dreamlands. What Great Old One shattered our reality? Can you hold it together and keep the Mythos at bay for one more song?

The cover illustration reminds me of Folkets Hus. Coincidental? If not, I guess I have to get this...

I can only assume the title is a reference to the fantastic Freddy Johnson tune Harlem Bound (recorded 1933).

As a swing music enthusiast, I have long wanted to set my Call of Chtulhu game in Harlem. The swing craze, with ensorcelling rhythms and dance possessed jitterbugs, seems ripe for Lovecraftian mysteries.

As a European however, only being familiar with a romanticized portrayal of Harlem, it's challenging how to tackle the social issues in a respectful manner. Now armed with this book, I hope I have what I need to be able to handle it.

If you need some background music for your games, here's a spotify playlist of awesome swing era Harlem related tunes, with plenty of Duke Ellington and Fats Waller:

Hey Darker Hue,

I am interested in this product but I do not see a Table of Contents when I click on either preview.

Update: After posting the above, I went to do a little more research, looked at the Kickstarter, and then found the pre-order page. After reading the goal of this project, I decided that I didn't need to read the table of contents to purchase. Chris, I salute what you've done here to directly engage the CoC/Gumshoe Gamer audience with a sourcebook that flips Lovecraft's treatment of POC. Part of the reason why I love CoC is that the system is directed toward learning about real history. Hardcover and PDF purchased.

Hey Folks at Darker Hue,

I am so looking forward to seeing this product. I will be ordering a digital copy immediately. Nevertheless, I would have liked to see a bit more in the preview, perhaps a table of contents. That being said, I will dig into the work and post a review here. Thanks.

Thanks, Chris.

The table of contents helps, as well as your direct comments on the the setting, historical accuracy, and racism. I'm looking forward to reading through the text, writing a review, and playing some Mythos horror set in 1920's Harlem. Thanks for your efforts.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
