Questers of the Middle Realms - second edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The lighter side of traditional fantasy gaming.

Want to dive into the wild, weird world of fantasy for a while without getting bogged down in lots of rules detail? Take a look inside!

  • The world of Median - an outline setting taking a fondly humorous look at fantasy gaming standards.
  • The PDQ System - a simple, fast and flexible set of rules emphasising story more than tactics, and easy to pick up for a quick game. As seen in Truth & Justice and Jaws of the Six Serpents.
  • A "build your own" approach - use the framework and add the gods, organisations and character types your gaming group wants in your stories.

Second edition, eh?

Questers originally came out back in 2006, using Chad Underkoffler's super-simple PDQ system. This is a revision and repackage really, but '2e' seemed more fitting as a nod to those classic fantasy games.

  • The rules are pretty much unchanged. (I removed Virtue and Vice, and may have clarified a couple of things.)
  • The main change is the layout, changed from Letter to Trade. There's been a print edition available through another outlet, but the format didn't work very well and I've long wanted a nicer one available here.
  • It's had another editing pass, and the sections have been reorganised to match 'Jaws' (which benefitted from the lessons learned with Questers!).
  • It's pulled in the mini-supplements 'Character Assistant' and 'Ten Magical Thingies'.
  • The art has kept some pieces, lost some and gained some new ones.

What they said about first edition

Product ratings and reviews: 3.9/5.

Kenneth Hite's Out of the Box Awards: Honourable Mention, Best New RPG of 2006 category

"Bravo for creating a game world that's likable, amusing, and open for expansion. But here's the dirty little secret: you don't have to play for laughs. It works at that level, of course, but if you just need a fantasy game system that plays easily, encourages broad characterization, and doesn't bog down in details, pick up Questers of the Middle Realms. It's a fun game, a fun read, and a bargain too."
Bob Portnell, Pyramid magazine

"...uses the PDQ system very well to model the type of game that it's going for. ... I think that it's a great design to capture that old-school fantasy gaming feel without capturing the frustration that a lot of the old-school fantasy systems brought in."
Paul Tevis, Have Games Will Travel #75

"Questers of the Middle Realms is a well-designed game, with a simple and elegant rules system. The design the world as you go approach built into the game is a neat innovation, and it fits the style and tone of the setting perfectly. The setting itself is intentionally and cleverly cliched, with a bare bones level of detail reminiscent of the original D&D; campaign settings."
Andrew Branstad, RPGNow staff reviewer

Say, is there any chance that the first version of this setting could be made available, most likely in PDF form only, for those that like working with older versions? A decent angle would be making said older edition solely available in a bundle with the current, 2nd edition, ensuring that only those that want both editions would bother getting them, or that those with the first edition would pay nothing extra for it.

If that isn't feasible, I recommend at least repairing the links on this website for the other PDQ products that mention Questers of the Middle Realms. They currently direct to the no-longer-available first edition, and thus do not work. I had to do extra searching to find this version.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the comment. I'm not sure what you mean, though. The first and second editions of the game aren't different in content, barring a bit of proofreading and adding in a couple of mini-supplements.

Thanks for the reminder about that PDQ footer though. I'll see whether I can remember how to fix it!

Fair Enough. If the editions are hardly changed between them, I guess it's fine, but some games change enough between editions that it is noticeable, and people like picking and choosing between edition mechanics and lore variations sometimes. Though without the ability to actually compare editions, I have to take your word for it (I believe you, I just feel that should be noted). Partially the desire to still get the first edition would be for that reason, but otherwise it would be for the "collector impulse". So, whatever works.

But yes, do fix those links if you can. That at least would confuse fewer people.

You probably -should- take my word for it. ;) Sorry if the description wasn't clear.

Very good. As one last note, though, check the link in "Product ratings and reviews: 3.9/5. See what they said." on this page. That link goes to the reviews of an unrelated product. I suggest either fixing it, or just removing that link altogether (as again, it would link to the now-unlisted first edition).

I just want to toss out that this game, and Serpents as well, are my favorite ways to to play fantasy games now days. I love the simplicity and flexibility of the system. I find it takes very little effort to convert any of my hundreds of modules to it.

I love the setting as well, because our hobby is absurd.

I am working on a home brew to make it more like the classic version of that "really popular RPG", but that isn't because the system lacks anything. It's because I am a hopeless tinkerer. This is a game that is fun to tinker with.

If you ever want submissions for material let me know. Writing for this game is a pure joy.

Feel free. I have started doing most of my gaming visa via play by post. I am starting a QMR game pretty soon. I think it will be ideal for PBP gaming because of it is light and narrative in focus, yet it works well for classic D&D style gaming as well, which is still by far the most popular.

I will drop you another line after I give it a run and let you know how that goes.

There will! That's kind of the point. ;) I'll do the set-up shortly, then there's a process of getting it accepted and checking the proof. Once it's ready I'll mail my customer list.

See above for my comment about the mailing lists not working. Given this, do you have someplace where we can actually register? I no longer trust this website...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
