Pilots' Almanac: Maritime & Piloting Rules

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The vocation of pilot is a perfect career for roleplaying. It provides an excellent and natural rationale for travel, exploration, and adventure. With this module, it becomes possible for PCs to go to sea and follow a career as pilot, pirate, or maritime trader. Of course, the distinctions between these occupations may be academic, since many PCs will dabble in all three.

This module, a republishing of the 1988 classic, contains the following sections:

  • Pilot (16 pages): Pilots' Guild, vessel profile, piloting routine
  • Crew (10): Seamen's Guild, crew positions, crewing a vessel, life at sea, law at sea, crew list, crew routines, crew fatigue
  • Shipwright (12): Shipwrights' Guild, shipyards, ships (data on 12 types of ship), shipbuilding
  • Maritime Trade (6): Trade goods, maritime trade routine, buying and selling cargoes, longshore operations, port encounters, cargo manifest
  • Port Almanac (10): data on ports of Hârn, Ivinia, Shorkyne, and Trierzon.
  • Glossary of maritime terms (6)
  • Maps of Hârn, Ivinia, Shorkyne, and Trierzon regions

Although these rules are designed for HârnMaster, they can be easily converted to other systems. About all that will be necessary is to convert the HârnMaster skill system to your own system. Or convert to HârnMaster; you will not regret it.

This is too expensive. Many of the Harn pdfs are price high.
Harndex: A HarnWorld Reference and Glossary $49.99 172p
HarnManor $29.99 86p
Kingdom of Kanday $39.99 52pp

I recommend the HârnWorld Starter Kit.
Hardworld Master Module 3rd and Kingdom of Kaldor both for $9.99. Then if you want to build your collection you can shell out the $.

I just watched Trevor Devall on YouTube talking about “The Dwarven Kingdom of Azadmere” and the book looks fantastic. This is great stuff. I still won’t pay the price. Even with Trevor’s recommendation.

I played the printed copy and will say this: It does what a game supplement should do: Inspire adventures, characters even a campaign.
The price point of a pdf does seem high but it will be a money's worth. Im considering rebuying as a pdf as my printed copy is in rough shape.
The game includes rules for skills which leads to characters, it has sailing rules and also trading rules. Ship designs allow some flexibility in the type and size of ship.
For my own campaign I added a ship type as the rules are fairly simple.
I did find one "bug" that came up when trying to make deckplans. The formulae they use of Coeffeicent x length x width x depth is historic but was used for the cargo hold. the cargo area is a uniform shape. The point of the bow and curve of the stern are different and many ships have long angles shaping the sides rather than a uniform block shape. The original coeffecieint is the CoBlock while the overhead issue is the CoPrism.
So if you are going to make deckplans...See more

I have the original and I'm not quite sure what they are thinking at $40 for a pdf. The book is 30 years old! They seem to be going the Games Workshop model of pricing.

I don’t think it’s the age of the work. The information here is still valid and very useful and has aged gracefully. It’s the price that’s what I think it’s just too high.

Surely the price must be a mistake. You can buy hard copies for half this price.

No, of course it's not a mistake. This is Columbia Games, the patron saints of ludicrous pricing. Note that I have this in hard copy, and it's a great piece of work by the best duo Harn ever had -- the originator Crossby, and his main collaborator in the golden years, Tom Dalgleish. I recommend the content 100%, but this price is ridiculous. Forty dollars for a PDF supplement of super-specialized rules -- and I'd imagine that this is one of the items that they didn't even update at all; just a PDF conversion of the original electronic files from '92 or whenever, so there's not even any new content costs to recoup. What goes through their heads at this company?

According to the post on the HarnForum, the document has high res scans of the four full-size regional maps plus two new ship types in addition to the original product. Whether that is worth $40 (less discounts) or not is up to you as an individual. I'll be buying it... and I'll be getting a discount....

Pricing is the main thing that's kept me from getting me into HarnMaster. :/

The regional maps were part of the original package, and two new ship types is nothing. Anyway, to each his own. I've used the book many times, built and crewed ships and used them in Harn games, and I think this is one of the best items they ever published. And IMO they're charging double what they should, given the merchandise you can get here for $20.00 (including quality print plus PDF from established publishers).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
