It’s Time!

Put aside the guesswork and feverish speculation: the V5 pre-alpha playtest is here!

Today we are sharing with you the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5) pre-alpha playtest kit, which includes the V5 pre-alpha rules and a special V5 pre-alpha scenario, The Night After. We invite you to download the kit and try it out: invite a few friends to play through the scenario together, talk about it, and then share your opinions with us through the online survey. We appreciate your feedback and value your input.

Please Note:

We will close the survey on 1 August in preparation for the alpha playtest.

We recommend strongly that you play the scenario and not just read the rules document. Actual play is the best way to experience and understand new rules concepts. In fact we suggest that you play it more than once, making different decisions each time to experience the full scope of the rules.

This version of the rules is pre-alpha. That means it’s not feature complete, and the designers have not made final decisions about what rules and features will be included. It was created specifically to test the new Hunger Dice mechanics for a live playtest at the World of Darkness Berlin fan convention in May. Much will change between this version and the Alpha, Beta, and final release versions.

We understand that you may be tempted to use this material to test the rules in ways that aren’t intended (such as trying to reverse-engineer the rules into your own scenarios, or published scenarios). We don’t recommend this: the pre-alpha rules were created specifically for The Night After scenario, and aren’t even close to final. We strongly recommend using them only to play The Night After scenario.

The Night After is a scenario that was designed specifically for these pre-alpha rules. It provides a glimpse into the tumultuous and destructive events that occurred in Berlin in May 2017, as told in Enlightenment in Blood, a VTM LARP event at the WoD Berlin convention. The scenario takes place on the evening immediately after Enlightenment in Blood, but no knowledge of that LARP or its events is necessary to enjoy the playtest.

It might be minor to some, but this game lost me when it reduced attributes from 9 to 3 with a specialty in one facet of an attribute. I've no interest in a game that seeks to homogenize characters so greatly.

I like the general gist of the new rules. The basic mechanics of a standardised target of 6, could go further and simply have 50% chance on rolls meaning any die type could be used in a pool. I like the removal of Botches, Rules of 1 and 10, and the 'Take Half' rule for diceless play.

I prefer to have the game streamline characters with just three core Attributes (and specialities) too. You could open up the specialities list beyond the original nine Abilities though- just make them open personal descriptors. I'm not sold on ditching Nature/Demeanor for Virtue/Vice, on the grounds that having a Demeanour apart from your Nature captures a core Masquerade theme. I quite like Hunger and the various drive stats, although I've yet to play them yet.

The skill selection is poor currently, with an unfortunate return of the Dodge skill (should be just a combat manoeuvre integrated into the Brawl or Athletics skill). I'd like Brawl and Melee to be merged also, with Specialities used to differentiate...See more

Toreador that suffer a compulsion to rape; a sample player-character Ventrue with a feeding requirement of children; the benefits of eating a baby....

Somewhere along the way, White Wolf took a bad turn in the development of this new version. And it's unfortunate. But if this is the sort of thing coming from the developers now, if they think that these things make a good RPG, I'll pass on the final product.

Perhaps there needs to be a disclaimer and adults only warning for the game, but the act of playing someone who drinks human blood is hardly a social act in itself. It's a horror rpg, and for this people will have to make up their own mind as to what their own level of comfort is. These themes are not new to vampire fiction, however.

It's the WORLD OF DARKNESS.
Personally, I am glad to see it return to exactly that: a WORLD OF DARKNESS.
The Revised content, so far, has not been World of Darkness. At all. It has been "modern fantasy, tee hee hee."

Good luck from France ! I enjoyed watching this video and hope the creators will concentrate their work on scenarii and story materials more than rules books. :)

Okay, I've given this a solid look over, and I have to admit I'm enjoying what I see. I like how you've tweaked dice pools, I like the hunger mechanic, I like the Conviction mechanic, it's all good. I think this is a wonderful approach to Vampire. I've just got two things I'm thinking about.

1) I hope that humans and other supernaturals - when you get to them - will also have a 'humanity' trait mechanic. I didn't like how every other race except Vampires could do horrible things without there being a real 'cost' to it. nWoD addressed this, and I think they did a great job. (And I don't mind Paths of Enlightenment, so if they show up again, cool.)

2) Skills. I'm not sure having PCs drop 1 to 5 into a huge bunch of skills is a good idea. You trimmed Attributes, and I like how you did it - it's elegant. I think Skills should perhaps be a 'Yes / No' sort of thing. You've got the skill or you don't. If you do, obviously this is something special about your character, so awesome,...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
