In OpenQuest you play fantastic death defying adventurers in search of fame and fortune. Every step of the way you'll be supported by these easy to understand rules based upon thirty years of the tried and tested D100 mechanic, which uses percentages to express the chance of success or failure.

A Complete Set of Rules. This book contains all you need play (except dice).

Easy to Learn. The rules have been pared back to the bare minimum and most rules only need a single roll to determine success or failure.

Organised. In logical easy to follow chapters, with advice for both Players and Games Masters throughout..

Examples. As well as the adventures of Rurik the Reckless there are copious examples of play.

Time-Tested. This version of the rules is based on the author's in game experiences of twenty years.

Flexible. Easily adaptable to the fantasy world of your choice.

Open. All the text of this book is Open Gaming Content under the Open Gaming License, so you can use it however you want even for commercial releases of your own.

Please Note: The printed versions are currently not available since the game is being updated to incorporate some minor corrections.  Please check back in a week or so.

I am extremely disappointed in the poor quality of rules and editing in OpenQuest refreshed.

I have been trying to make the system work as smoothly as possible but every week either my players or myself find an inconsistency or out right contradiction in the text. Some pretty blatant examples:

Grappling is only mentioned in one place in the book but no where else. So there is not explanation as to exactly what that means.

Sorcery has different requirements if you look at it from character creation versus in play.

Weapon strengths and dexterity requirements are mentioned but not listed in the book.

There are monsters in the bestiary that are not even finished.

These are just the ones that I can come up with at the top of my mind.

Anyone on the Editor and Proof Readers list should be ashamed to see their name there.

Avoid this system at all costs.

Any chance for a higher resolution file? Right now the cover is rendered at a sad 72DPI and internal graphics at 100DPI. It looks absolutely awful zoomed in or on a high PPI screen... :/ Any chance you could bump the resolution of cover & images to at least 120-150?

Just wondering what happens to those of us who bought OpenQuest 2 Deluxe as that title is no longer available? Is there a way to get the update without having to pay again?

There's no need to rush out and rebuy the new version. The new version is mainly a tidy up with new art. The Combat chapter has been reorganised so it makes more sense, but other than that the content is mainly unchanged. If you have OQ2 Deluxe you also get an extra setting chapter and starter scenario, which was cut from the new version. Any supplements I release from now on are still 100% compatible with OQ2 Deluxe.

Here's a big summary which lists the changes in detail

If you want the updated Combat chapter, it will be included in the updated OpenQuest Basics that will be released soon in a free pdf and low cost print form.

Is there any way for new customers to get the setting chapter and starter scenario? I bought this & Savage North - I like them both a lot, but SN does not seem to be intended for beginning characters (based on the pre-gens and the number of enemies). I can adapt SN, but I like the setting & would like to know more about it.

So what is that this game can uniquely bring onto the table that its d100 brethren can't?

I am interested to know about the system, differences the flavor of fantasy that it can do etc

    Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
    Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
