Neverending Challenges Await!

Challenge your players like never before using the SKILL CHALLENGE HANDBOOK, by Everyman Gaming LLC. Building up decades of roleplaying game mechanics and history, the SKILL CHALLENGE HANDBOOK provides GMs with everything they need in order to design truly memorable skill-based challenges for their PCs. With the SKILL CHALLENGE HANDBOOK, skills in the Pathnder Roleplaying Game are no longer a one-roll-solves-all affair: success requires strategy, cooperation, and determination, transforming even the simplest scene into a full-fledged encounter with as much depth as any battle.

  • Rules for running skill challenges—multi-check scenarios that require PCs to think tactically and plan accordingly in order to win the day.
  • An in-depth analysis of how to construct skill challenges for use in your home games, as well as a step-by-step guide pertaining to the construction to whatever skill challenge you need to properly set the scene.
  • Four skill challenge subtypes: chases, contests, influence challenges, and verbal duels, each designed with their own mechanical quirks and special features, as well as rules describing how to properly run and construct skill challenges of each type.
  • Example skill challenges of each type presented within to provide GMs with adequate examples, as well as ready-to-play skill challenges for fast use.
  • And much more!

With Everyman Gaming, innovation is never more than a page away!

Thilo's comments speak volumes to me, and I enjoyed the Skill Challenge system of 4E, it truly was the start of a useful roleplaying game mechanic. This book is now an auto-add for me.

Similar to Timonthy B below I would like to know the failure condition for a successes based challenge like A Meal Fit For a Dragon and An Audience With the King. Especially since these have no failure conditions but give penalties for failing.

Any plans to make a 5E version of this book?

For skill challenges that don't have time pressure, but have demerits, is the idea to reach the necessary number of successes before three demerits? If so, how can the PCs fail to gain the requisite number of successes while having fewer than three demerits? There are options for such a scenario on the "A Meal Fit for a Dragon" example, on page 22. Am I misunderstanding how failure occurs? Thank you for your help!

I purchased this book, and found it rather interesting. I just have one question, on page 28, there is a section about 'Running Skill Challenges Together', if you were to have two skill challenges taking place concurrently would you write out two Skill Challenge stat-blocks or would you combine them? If combined, how would the stat-block look?

I ask because I am trying to write out a combined skill challenge that involves two different tasks to be run simultaneously. The first, to rescue/stabilize dying individuals in a burning building; The second, to put out the flames of the burning building.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
