Originally released in 2015, this adventure was written for Swords & Wizardry White Box. We have since greatly expanded the book, added fantastic new art by Del Teigeler and Peter Saga, and added new maps from George Fields and Kris McDermott.

Bandits! Kidnapped children! Ancient evil!

As our heroes head past the small village of Elhann, they find themselves drawn into a battle that could lead to the end of the world... A local bandit is kidnapping children from this and other villages - but why? Will our heroes get to the bottom of the mystery before it's too late?

The Snake's Heart is a short adventure for use with Mazes & Perils and other old-school fantasy role-playing games. Designed for 4-6 player characters of 1st or 2nd level, this module provides material for a session of adventure and includes one new monster. It also serves as an entry into the world of the Lost Age...

The World of the Snake's Heart is one of muscles, magic, and mad gods. This is a world where might makes right in all the worst ways. This is the Lost Age.

Your heroes are the adventurous souls of this day and find themselves traveling near the village of Elhann on the Great Plain -- home to shepherds, gardeners, horsemen, and a few aged warriors. As they get closer, they find the village attacked by a group of bandits. At the edge of the village, they see four aggressors guarding a cage filled with children and the others nearby seem intent on adding to their catch. But a few have spotted your party and are coming to investigate!

This adventure has a little bit of everything, from saving the village of Elhann to rescuing its kidnapped kids and everything in-between. This is not for the faint of heart, as the Cult of the Serpent Queen has foul intentions for those innocent souls!

It’s been a long time coming, but we’re excited to finally release the revised version of The Snake’s Heart for Mazes & Perils to the world. This is a greatly expanded version of the adventure we first released in 2015 for Swords & Wizardry.

  • Old adventure: 4,000 words, 19 digest-sized pages (including cover)
  • New adventure: 12,500 words, 34 full-sized pages (including front and back cover)
  • Stats redone for Mazes & Perils
  • Maps completely redone by Kris McDermott (Elhann village map) and George Fields (all of the tower maps)
  • Art has gone from 3 pieces and a piece of clip art to 5 custom pieces from Del Teigeler, Peter Saga, and Mickey Fitzpatrick, new spot art, and a custom new layout and cover from layout artist Robert Denton

The new book has 25 pages of content, with details on:

  • The Village of Elhann
  • The Cult of the Serpent Queen
  • The Serpent Queen herself
  • Clerics of the Serpent
  • And new magic items

A Note about the print version

Due to some limitations with the printed cover here, we had to change the cover slightly from the snakeskin image to a solid black image. The content is exactly the same other than that small adjustment. As such, the OBS print version is a Special Edition only available through this retailer.

Pssst... Have you taken a look at Mazes & Perils Deluxe yet? It's a blast of Old School Renaissance roleplaying that's calling your name!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
