What if the first RPG was inspired by epic tales of the buccaneers and pirates of the Caribbean? Instead of slogging their way through gloomy dungeons, freebooters hoist the Jolly Roger and seek plunder and adventure on the high seas!

FREEBOOTERS is a pirate-themed retro-clone intended to be compatible with the original fantasy RPG, Raiders, Guardians, Colonial Troopers, Warriors of the Red Planet and others. The rules presented can be used as a complete game or a companion to fantasy games using the same overall system. This book is a resource for Referees to pick and choose from!

A Complete Roleplaying Game!

• 4 Character classes: Sea Rover, Musketeer, & Striker

• The optional voodoo wielding Bokor class

• Ship-to-Ship Combat

• Caribbean map for cutthroat adventures on the high seas!

There's no description on how characters, aside from bokors, obtain skills.

I also find the prospect of rolling up to 30d20 for damage from a broadside (even from a galleon) unwieldy. Taking inspiration from Flashing Blades: High Seas, I'd rather multiply 3d6 by the number of cannons in the volley.

Overall this game has so much promise in its simplicity, but feels exceptionally incomplete even for an OD&D derivation.

Yes, it's not perfect, there is room for improvement.

I'm not a fan of skills in OSR games and only put them there for a vocal minority. It's not hard to figure out how the other classes could obtain skills.

Love your suggestion for broadside cannon fire.

This looks fantastic! I'm a fan of Warriors of The Red Planet and I'm glad to see a book for my other favorite genre.

Question: will you be offering print versions for sale soon? I picked up one of your games (Guardians) at North Texas RPG Con and I'd like to get hold of this (and Raiders) as print versions so's I can review them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
