Directors' Annotated Paranoia Rulebooks

Watermarked PDF

Welcome to Alpha Complex! Welcome to the ranks of the Troubleshooters! Welcome to Paranoia!

NOTE: These rulebooks are PDFs annotated with comments from the creators of the all new Paranoia, reflecting the processes they went through during its writing and their thoughts upon completion of their work, giving a rare insight into the warped minds behind the new edition...

As a Troubleshooter, you are a member of Alpha Complex’s most expendable elite force. Tasked with finding trouble and shooting it, you will be hunting mutants, terrorists, traitors, [CLASSIFIED], secret societies, renegade bots, and DAIVs, which are [REDACTED]. You’ll save Alpha Complex from its greatest threat, unless you accidentally become Alpha Complex’s greatest threat.

Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Paranoia is the classic RPG of a darkly humorous future, rebooted for a humorously dark present. All-new mechanics include a simple yet brilliant character-generation system, a bluffing-based card-driven combat system that encourages creativity, clever moves and lying, a special Computer Dice which means even the simplest interaction can become hilariously fatal, in-game XP point rewards, and more advice to GMs than you can shake a stick at. Three single-session adventures introduce you painlessly to the new mechanics and background, and are designed to be played straight out of the box.

Everything is the same but everything is different.

You look worried, citizen. Relax! It’s still Paranoia. The year is still 214. You still have six clones and a laser pistol. The Computer is still your friend.

Does this version include everything that the Red Clearance Edition does, just with additional annotations? The page count here says 288, bye RCE says 330.

The page count might be wrong. The page count for the Red Clearance Edition originally said it was 107 pages until the Publisher corrected it.

I saw that. I just want to make sure that if I spend $50, I'm getting the full deal. :)

Why is this version 181 pages longer than the Red Clearance Edition? At least give us a preview so we can see how this is different.

Is there a way to get a discount on the director's commentary editions if we already bought the regular version?

Thanks! I backed the kickstarter at the Ultraviolet level, but I always regretted not getting the director's commentary. I am excited to see the thoughts that went in to making this great game.

I would have to agree with the other folks here. In my mind Paranoia was largely a "fringe" game. The pool of potential buyers who might grab this has just about dried up at a $50 price point. In addition this is, no matter how much re-tooling, still a rehash of old material. Also in the description it says "rulebooks" (plural) without elaborating on what that means/includes. I'm assuming that the rulebooks are the same as in the "Paranoia Red Clearance Edition", which is $29.99. Also, on the computer die, is it something that actually exists and is available separately? I'm glad to see "Paranoia" resurface, just disappointed in the price structure.

It's the director's cut PDF. I would assume they're releasing the regular, non-annotated one soon. Otherwise, yeah, that's crazy

I was pretty excited when I got an email about the new Paranoia game. But $50 for a pdf? I might have considered picking it up if it was $50 for a PoD + pdf combo, but that's a bit pricy for just a digital copy....

I'd love to try Paranoia, but there's no way that I'm paying $50 for a PDF. Are there any plans to release this new content in book form?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
