Reflections: A Game of Dueling Samurai

Two Samurai face off against each other. Each grip the steal at their side. A lifetime ago they were friends, now, one is filled with sorrow while the other burns with anger. Their story ends here, the sins of the past cannot be forgiven, only atoned with blood.

Reflections is a 2-player RPG about samurai who were once friends, that have now turned bitter rivals. The game begins with the characters coming together to have a final duel, but before the duel occurs, they flash back and relive the events of their past that took them from the greatest of friends, to the bitterest of rivals. The game plays in 1-2 hours, requires no prep, and guarantees you will have an emotionally dramatic story.

What you need to Play:

  • PDF or Physical copy of the Reflections Game Book
  • Reflections Character Sheet
  • A pile of d6 dice for each player

While the default theme of the game is a Samurai drama, the book also contains 5 additional settings so that you can play the game in many unique ways. If you prefer Sky Pirates, Gunslingers, Professional Wrestlers, World War 1 Fighter Pilots, or even a Romantic Comedy, all of those are supported by the game. These additional settings were written by  industry professionals Ken Hite, John Wick, Ben Woerner, and Tobie Abad

It seems that Third Act Publishing's site is down, and so there is no way to get the character sheet and play the game, as it isn't included in the book. Can anyone direct me to another place where the sheet is hosted, or maybe Third Act Publishing can add it to DriveThruRPG?

I like the artwork. But, like the other commenter, I'd appreciate a hint of the kind of rules system being used here. Is it adapted from one of the generic open-licence systems like Fate Core or Powered by the Apocalyse? Or something new? How much of the book is game mechanics and how much is samurai/feudal Japan setting information? A brief outline would be appreciated.

The "system" is very simple and only affects the outcome of the story really. If you are looking for an turn based adventure game like D&D skip this, it's a pure storytelling game, there is only one battle at the end of the game. You have multiple "acts" in which you attempt to achieve a goal. Your opponent has his own goals, and neither of you know the other's goals. Fulfilling your goals adds to a dice pool that you use in the final battle. RPG Academy did an excellent playthrough you can listen to here

Okay, thanks!
When you fill out Product Information (that appears along the right edge) there is a line for Rules System(s). You can fill in that it's an "original" system or something, not dependent on any system that came before.

Is there a way for the "Quick Preview" link shows more than the title page? It only shows the 1-3 pages with no content. Or can you update the description section here to tell us a summary about the game mechanics?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
