The Drums of War Sound

The great nations of Europe struggle for control of the New World. Native Americans struggle for their land and their lives. Planters and traders struggle for wealth and position. A new nation struggles to be born.

But look beneath the surface.

Monsters stalk the woods. Angry ghosts and spiteful witches plague the villagers. Explorers search for lost cities and fabled treasures. Ancient evils are awakened. There is a secret history, and this history deals with events that took place in the shadows. These events played a role in the history of the American colonies and the Revolution that few know about.

The truth is hidden, and plots are afoot. Events are moving behind the scenes, and lurking in the shadows are agents with their own agenda.

All have read about the founding of America. This history shows what led to the American Revolution and the cry for independence. The history is clear, and there is no real dispute over these events. You know the history.

Or do you?

There is a secret history that deals with events taking place in the shadows. These events played a role in the history of the American colonies and the Revolution few know about. From the crowded streets of New York City, to the deep country trails of Georgia, the shadows teem with enemies of conflicting agendas.

War is coming. The Siege of Boston is lifted, and General Washington is leading the Continental Army to New York. The enemies are many, but as to who they are, you do not know.

Colonial Gothic is a supernatural historical horror roleplaying game set during the dawn of the American Revolution.

Revised, rewritten and redesigned Colonial Gothic Rulebook 3rd Edition provides players and Gamemasters what they need to run adventures during the American Revolution. Everything you need to run a historical supernatural horror game is found in this book: rules covering the use of magic and alchemy, in-depth information on the life and times of the colonies, a bestiary of monsters pulled straight from the period; the possibilities are endless. Using a fast and simple mechanic, setting up and running a game of Colonial Gothic has never been easier. Plus, this 3rd Edition Rulebook is fully compatible with all previous Colonial Gothic adventures and sourcebooks.

Now the time has come.

War is here.

Is there any plans or possibility of getting a working character sheet up on Roll20? I'm making one myself but my html/css is rusty and it's taking me a long time. I was hoping to run it by Halloween but doesn't look like I'll have a working sheet up which is a must for my group.

Now I am very interested in picking this up yet see the February 14th, 2017 comment and I want to buy the pdf and print, however I would like to know if the files are cleaned up. I see that the Publisher has commented on the pdf files, yet obviously in late January. Was Dale commenting on the previous pdf or the current one?

After reading the review I was very hesitant to buy CG3 but, as I'd looked on RPGDT I saw it had some updates and a POD now so I figured it must have been edited further with corrections made. As much as I have enjoyed this game since its first iteration I am sorely disappointed after going through the PDF. I would essentially review it just as the other review . . . in short it is a hot mess. I cringe just thinking about the POD I purchased and honestly I wish I could cancel that order until the PDF is corrected in more detail. The setting is amazing and I can tell a lot of effort has gone into attempting to make it the outstanding RPG I know it could be . . . seems it just needed more time for editing and even layout. Many confusing and even contradictory elements with some sections simply missing text. Hope it all gets corrected over time and a new POD is available but, I think the first $30 is all I will invest on it.

I wanted to make an update on CG3, as of today the publisher has kindly (and with frequent, excellent communication I might add) sent me an email confirming a new copy of CG3 updated completely from the previous PoD. I only sent one email and got a very swift response from the publisher and he did not hee haw around at all . . . he just made it right and promised to send me a new copy PoD when it became available. I have not had this kind of service from any company yet alone a gaming publisher (which are many times notoriously bad) and felt that anyone thinking about giving CG3 a try or another try please do. This is the kind of company and its games I want to support. It is one thing when everything goes swimmingly but, I am far more impressed when there is a hitch and the problem is handled so professionally. Integrity is a hard thing to come by these days and Rogue Games has it in spades.

Thanks, Dale, I appreciate it. Mistakes happen, and mistakes were made. I have always felt, and always will feel, that it is easier to address n issue then ignore it. CG3E was in development for a long time, and one loo, at the credits, shows that many people proofread it, and edited. We missed things despite that.

Since then, lessons have been learned and this mistake, hopefully, will not happen again.

I'm not perfect, and I know I will always make mistakes. No harm no foul, and I much rather take the short term embarrassment so I can fix the problem, then ignore it.

I am glad I was able to work things out for you.

Does this make any of the older sourcebook obsolete? Basically by incorporating nearly all the material from them into this new edition. Just wondering before buying into the game.

I appreciate your openness to and responsiveness to feedback. I tried to redownload the PDF after I saw your comment that you had uploaded a corrected version. Unfortunately, my new download does not seem to have any noticeable changes from the previous one, including the malfunctioning bookmarks.

Would it be possible for me to get some contact information so that I could get assistance resolving this issue?

contact info is on the website.

I do not understand where the issues are. I will relook at the book marks.

I get the feeling, if you wanted to, you could use this to do stuff like the "Sleepy Hollow" TV series, the part that takes place during that period anyway.

Yes you could. One of my players did the very same thing. The rules do not get in the way.

That would be kind of cool given some of the intresting ideas the show has come up with over it's run, even with the recent switch from the city of Sleepy Hollow to Washington DC. :)

Will this be a PoD any time soon?
Customer avatar
Richard I January 03, 2017 2:38 pm UTC
Yes. The files are at the printers now. As soon as I have a proof and approve it, it will be ready for PoD. It typically takes about two weeks from start to finish for a book to be ready via PoD.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
