The Void

Into the Void

Beyond the anti-spinward edges of Earth’s territory in the galaxy lies the Void. A roughly spherical section of space approximately one hundred parsecs in diameter, the Void is a place spacers avoid—and with good reason—there are no stars to be found there. The Void is so full of dust, gas, and debris that it effectively blocks any starlight from passing through, making it a dark circle in the night sky of many worlds. Within the Void are dozens of shattered solar systems, each made up of burned and blasted planets slowly orbiting the remains of now-dead stars. These brown dwarfs are compacted and frozen cinders—all that’s left of once life-giving suns—with most of their mass having been ejected into space as some unknown event consumed them.

The Void is a mini-setting for science-fiction gaming, meant to be easily dropped into any RPG setting dealing with space travel and the dangers thereof. It's system-agnostic, and while there's a great deal of excellent, well-researched material here, plenty is left readily open to the Game Master's imagination and capacity for customization.

Easy to read. Easy to use. Full of incredibly unique concepts.

I inserted it into my campaign even before I finished reading it.
Then with a little research I’ve been able to expand it into a full set of linked scenarios.
It’s especially fascinating for amateur astronomy nerds like myself. (I loved the consideration given to the effects of stellar emissions on EM sensors.)

I tend to prefer Hard Scif and as such I don't believe in FTL outside of StarGates. But I could imagine a scenario where a corporation that wants to explore the void for resources and artifacts sents in a robot Gate-builder Ship travelling at near lightspeed. After decades it arrives at a system near the edge and finds each of the dozen shattered solar systems are connected by alien gates. So they higher the players to go into the gate and explore it. Horror and hilarity ensues.

Cheers this is a an awesome concept. Should be made into a source book.

I'm curious if this is based on a real spot in the galaxy? Obviously the contents of the Void must be your invention, but is there a dusty dark spot without stars anti-spinward of us?

Possibly? There are parts of the galaxy where immense dust clouds gather, but nothing (that I know of) exactly like what I described in this product.

Still, it's an interesting idea.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
