White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game is an easy to learn role-playing game in the style of the Original Edition from 1974 by Gygax and Arneson. It is based on Swords & Wizardy WhiteBox.

Unleash your imagination to dream of other worlds, where you roleplay heroic characters and go on adventures, just like in the days of old.

Slay a dragon!
Sometimes even the most reluctant adventurer will hear the call of the Wilderness and set out to slay a dragon, or at least steal its treasure!

Explore the unknown!
There is no limit to the lands you can explore and magic you can discover.

Fight on!
So grab your sword, mace or wand and travel beyond the borderlands and brace yourself to face great and terrible monsters. And remember, no matter what happens… Fight on!

Question on the Fighter's Combat Fury ability. Do they get their extra attack(s) only on enemies with 1 HD or fewer (a creature with 2 HD not counting) or 1 HD or fewer than the warriors current HD?

I ask because, when I look through the monsters, I don't see any 1 HD creatures.

I just got the a copy from a different place. I am confused about the magic-user xp table. Levels 11 and 12 have none listed just a dash What do I do with this?

Following up on the second of two questions for the publisher, because I'm interested in the alt. covers, too:

2) Will any of the old cover options be availiable again as print on demand choices. I ask as I love the previous William McAusland and Stefan Poag covers.

I'd like to ask a request to the author: is it possible to update the table of contents to include the monster names, or the initial letter? I think it would make it perfect (the book is already amazing)!

I saw a one line blog from the author on 04/22/20 indicating that this has been updated to version 2.1 but I do not see any update here nor do I seem able to respond anywhere at that website.

Does anyone have any information on this or know how to obtain that update?

Thank you!

Have a question about the Morale Check table on page 40. What does "Fight for Advantage" mean? Is this saying that the monster group will fight until they have advantage over the party? For some odd reason I'm not "getting" it. Thanks for any clarification.

That's the way I see it: the monsters will fight until they are in a better position -- maybe wound the party a bit more than they are wounded -- then maybe the Ref checks morale again?

I think you're confused. It's not missing. Halflings don't work like elves. They choose a class. You use the table for that class.

Why doesn't my PDF have the nice color cover? I want that, not a plain b&W cover!

I'm the reverse, I'd love a PoD version with the PDF's white cover.

Is there any update/revision/additions between the two downloads (Apr 1027, Oct 2016) that accounts for the page count difference, or is it just layout changes?

Is there any differences between the B&W cover version and the Red cover version, other than the cover? Amazon lists the B&W as newer but both as the same printing. Is the interior identical?

RPGnow uses the premium color offset printing, which is more expensive to produce. It looks much better than the standard print at Lulu.

Two questions for the publisher.

1) Is there still a slightly newer/revised coming soon?
2) Will any of the old cover options be availiable again as print on demand choices. I ask as I love the previous William McAusland and Stefan Poag covers.

This is the newer/revised version.

I will add the other covers when I can. I just don't have an ETA at the moment.

I have since picked up 4 more copies of the awesome digest sized book and all supporting material for our Whitbox gaming club "Order of the Crimson Die". The rules are simple and flow like melted butter allowing amazing stories and enhanced role playing to really shine through. I have so many good adventures written now. Game mechanics slowing things down and ruining the fun is now a thing of the past. 5 stars.

I gave up all other OSR games and even dropped my 5e campaign to launch my new White Box Home brew game. It opened with Werewolves at the temple of the Dog, proceded to the God Filled Plains where giant 200ft zombie clockwork golems roam chained to the sands of time and ended with the PC's bringing down the black sun and destroying the world and becoming Gods. The most fun I have ever had at the table period. White Box is the one to rule them all. My players couldnt believe how much fun they had. I cant recomend it highly enough.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
