Be a wild Barbarian, a deadly Fighter, a soul-torn Sorcerer or a sword sharp canny Thief, fighting evil tyrants and foul demons in a world rapidly dying and heading towards its final nemesis.

Crypts and Things (C&T) is a Swords and Sorcery Roleplaying game based upon the Old School Rules of the 70s/80s. It also draws upon the British fantasy games and game-books of that period to bring a distinctly dark and dangerous feel to the game.

It was originally released back in early 2012 and after a highly successful Kickstarter in 2015 it returns in a Remastered edition, with revised and expanded content and entirely new art by David M. Wright.

Will I be able to play Sword & Sorcery in the style of Solomon Kane or is it for archaic/fantasy worlds only?

No guns but the game is SO REH! So I would say it wouldn't take that much effort, HOWEVER Char gen is VERY tied to pure S&S and the included setting. You could take included setting and "Dump" it in the middle of Africa as a VERY "Lost World " Kinda thing. But if your SOLD on doing an SK game , C&T would be a fair fit, very much doubt you'd find better.

Just a quick question, for those of us who bought the un-Remastered version, which apparently is no longer accessible. Will we need to purchase this version, or will this be replacing the one we paid for?

Robert H October 05, 2016 5:37 pm UTC
Not associated with the project, but your previous purchase should still be available in your library even if it has been removed from the storefront.

You are absolutely correct, I was trying to open the link the Crypts and Things page from my library, and that link no longer works, but I can still download it.

Thanks Robert!

Still curious about whether or not this will be replacing the old version, or if we will need to buy this new edition? Or if perhaps I should wait for Newt to send out a coupon or something to previous buyers?

I've been burned a couple of time by purchasing something and then an hour later getting a coupon for it in my email, so I'd like to be sure before buying this new edition.

Hi Jonathan

This is in effect a new edition - completely revised rules and text, complete new art with 100+ new pages of content.

I've no plans to send out a coupon for previous buyers to upgrade their 1st edition.

FYI, this is not 100% correct. There have been several times, for me, that this has been untrue. The WotC thing from a few years ago comes to mind. Sometimes rules convert to the IP holder (Gamma World 6e was published by White Wolf/Sword and Sorcery, but reverted back to WotC. My phb is no longer available to me due to the change). Other times there are rules updates (reprint?) that do weird things to your library (Castles and Crusades, though they are very good at fixing issues if you get in touch directly with them), and sometimes, the product is updated to a newer edition (say from 3.5 D&D to 5 D&D) and for some reason the old product disappears into the ether (I have several products that are simply gone that I know I have purchased here due to the watermark).

TL;DR It's a good question due to how things work, sometimes.

Newt, what about those who didn't know about the KS 'til it was too late (and still haven't forgave themselves, btw), but kept agonizingly checking up on the comments & updates daily despite not being a backer and unable to comment, and purchased the old pdf edition in the past, and purchased this brand new Remastered pdf edition the day it went live to the general public!!!... Will you at the very least offer a discount on the Hardcover POD when it is available???

Review part 2 A brief look at the setting provided by rule book

When I had the Beta version only to go by I was unimpressed, felt skimpy and lacking depth, but on closer inspection, the setting is a perfect representation of EXACTLY fitting the rules.

It is extremely distopian as you would expect from a game with out clerics, paladins and alignment(where all PCs get "back stab") Very little in way of bits of DECENT civilization exists. The characters can easily be anywhere on what would be the alignment scale, defending the last bits of hope or summoning the foul denizens of darker dimensions. as you know I'm not much of a guy for spoilers but I came away very satisfied that the Continent of Terror will be able to hold my and my players atentionts for the remaining years I have of gaming life. I run epic battles against Darkness and my over arching 10 year gaming plan will need a little adjustment but that will be far easier than writing up a whole new world. Actually you only...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
