Star Bastards

A high-speed pursuit along the derelict starlanes of Route 663!

The Space Exploration Pole has run afoul of the powerful star-spanning Conglomerate and the lawdogs are on his trail. Help him evade justice or ride shotgun with the cop sworn to bring him in. Either way it’s a two-fisted, white-knuckled chase through the most dangerous and derelict part of the galaxy, chock full of memorable characters, scheming aliens and deadly traps.

You call the shots: fly, gamble, fight and sleaze your way to freedom or victory in this Two-Fisted Fantasy adventure! Inside you’ll find a complete set of rules for racing along the starways and thumping the denizens of the Star Bastards universe: all you need to provide is a couple of dice and your two rock-hard fists!

This Two-Fisted gamebook is a full-scale gamebook adventure of the kind you might remember from the 80s or early 90s. If you've never played a gamebook it's more or less a solo RPG with some light stats and item management where the book itself acts as the GM. This one has 400 paragraphs and 100,000 words packed full of adventure, interesting characters and action-filled alien locations. Two complete adventures in one, with a large selection of co-pilots and items to ensure replayability. Inside you’ll find 32 full-page illustrations, a bunch of smaller graphics and 20 or so pages of rules and fluff. The pdf version is hyperlinked and bookmarked throughout for your convenience although you'll have to hunt through the print version the old-fashioned way.

Be sure to check out the crew and item card deck here on DriveThruRPG too: it'll really improve the playing experience and looks pretty snazzy! You can also get the free Support Pack which has a digital version of the card deck and a quick reference guide.  You can also get a copy of Space Exploration Quarterly, a free lore booklet with some background info. The book's perfectly playable as is though. All you'll need is a couple of dice and your two rock-hard fists.

Are this and The Sword of the Bastard Elf like the old Fighting Fantasy books in that there is "one true way and it will take you several attempts to find it", or are there multiple paths and endings?

Heya Emil,

Star Bastards is a little more linear (there are a few possible "good" endings and it's really two different short adventures) but really you either get away from the cop/catch the fugitive before he escapes, or you don't.

Elf is a sprawling monster of a book with numerous paths through. There is a "true ending" but it's no more exciting or interesting than the other endings and it's really more about the journey than anything else. I doubt any individual player has ever found everything you can do in it.

Apologies for the recent price fluctuations, the price was reset to the pre-sale value. I probably entered it weirdly. Anyway should be ok now. If you buy this book and enjoy it (or not) you'd be doing me a big favour if you write up your thoughts on it - it'll help me with the next one.

Thanks for that! I hope you enjoy the book and the cards. I'm hoping DriveThru can expand its card business a bit because at present it's not a great deal for anyone outside the US, but what can you do. Also thanks for the heads up on Star Smuggler. I'm hoping to make a kind of fusion board game/gamebook at some point in the future and it's interesting too see how modular rulesets work. Anyway their catalog should keep me busy for a while.

I'll put a link to the Space Exploration Quarterly booklet on the product page as well. It's just a short lore book.
Anyway thanks again! I'd be interested to know what you think once you've bashed through the book as well.

...You should also mention the free Space Exploration Quarterly supplement available, whatever it does.

Delightful! I'm a-buying, and the cards as well, although the courier "processing fees" to go across Customs will be killer for me.

It is great to have a game which is not just a pick-a-paragraph game but has some dice-rolling and sheet management like an RPG. I remember an old product similar to this in the 80s, which was STAR SMUGGLER (Heritage USA/DwarfStar), with paragraphs for adventure incidents, cards for the hemispheres of planets which could be mixed and matched as needed, and another modular booklet for rules (also in numbered paragraphs and accessed only as they were needed). That and their other (fantasy) RPG set (BARBARIAN PRINCE), plus several war games, are now downloadable online at no cost.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
