Building Adventures
Regular price: $4.99
Bundle price:
 $3.99
Format:
 PDF
Building Adventures: A minimalist 96-page guide to creating memorable stories for any tabletop roleplaying system or setting. Like any other form of fiction, a tabletop roleplaying adventure works best when there’s a beginning, a middle, and an end. Player characters can pursue a goal without being railroaded into one specific way of achieving it. That same goal prevents characters from wandering aimlessly through an open-ended setting. A balance of styles will respect the players’ creativity and choices, while reducing some of the burden placed on the gamemaster. There’s a satisfying amount of closure, because achieving the goal means that the adventure has come to an end with the characters “winning”.  Building Adventures is about finding that balance. There is a way to creat...

Building Characters
Regular price: $4.99
Bundle price:
 $3.99
Format:
 PDF
Building Characters: A minimalist 96-page guide to creating memorable characters for any tabletop roleplaying system or setting. Tabletop roleplaying is about characters. It’s something so fundamental and obvious that it’s often taken for granted. If your tastes run toward the wargaming end of the spectrum, a character is your game piece, the way that you interface with the system. For those who lean more toward the storytelling end, your character is a means of self-expression, the way that you can vicariously interact with the world and the adventures it offers. Building a character with an interesting background, then, will heighten your overall experience of the game. In this book, we’ll explore what goes into crafting memorable and enjoyable tabletop roleplaying character back...

Building Monsters
Regular price: $4.99
Bundle price:
 $3.99
Format:
 PDF
Building Monsters: A minimalist 96-page guide to creating memorable adversaries for any tabletop roleplaying system or setting. Books filled with pregenerated monsters are a staple of tabletop roleplaying. Not just for fantasy, either. Modern horror needs its share of terrifying creatures. Science fiction needs aliens and extradimensional beings. Even superheroes get their share of strange mutations and scientific experiments gone awry. Endless volumes have been written on how to generate statistics for the system of your choice and generate new and original creatures. Building Monsters takes a different approach. In this book, we’ll look at monsters as full-fledged characters. We’ll show you how to develop back stories, and motivations for their actions. By doing this, you’ll hav...

Building Theme
Regular price: $4.99
Bundle price:
 $3.99
Format:
 PDF
Building Theme: A minimalist 96-page guide to creating memorable stories for any tabletop roleplaying system or setting. When discussing any other form of storytelling, the concept of theme will eventually come up. It doesn’t matter if the medium is a novel, a film, a television series, even a comic book or a song. The people having the discussion might be writers, readers, critics, or academics. Opinions will be exchanged about what the deeper meaning of the story is, and what the author of the piece was trying to say. For some reason, in over 30 years in the tabletop roleplaying hobby, I’ve never had a conversation about theme. Not with players, and curiously not with gamemasters, either. There’s always talk about character development, worldbuilding, and even plot, other elements...

Building Worlds
Regular price: $4.99
Bundle price:
 $3.99
Format:
 PDF
Building Worlds: A minimalist 96-page guide to creating memorable settings for any tabletop roleplaying system or genre. The term worldbuilding gets thrown around frequently by tabletop roleplayers in reference to the construction of a fantasy realm or even an entire fictional universe. There are maps and ecologies and complex histories involved, with all sorts of engaging little details sprinkled in. While these worlds are presumably being created to provide a grand stage for an ongoing campaign, the act of worldbuilding is often an end unto itself. It’s a creative outlet even if it never gets used in a game, and one that’s a whole lot of fun. If you’ve got time for that, great. There’s no wrong way to engage in that sort of worldbuilding. One of the greatest challenges that man...

Names and Their Meaning

Please read this product description carefully. Look at the preview. It's probably not what you'd expect it to be based on the title. Tabletop roleplaying has instilled in me three things: a love of history, a love of words, and a love of lists. While other people gravitated toward Appendix N, what I loved most about the 1st Edition Dungeon Master’s Guide were the tables and appendices filled with all manner of vocabulary that was new to me. Forms of government! Royal and noble titles! A person’s interests, collections, and approach to materialism! That stuff sparked me imagination, and sent me off in search of context for those words. That in turn led to the creation of some interesting player characters and oddly specific bits of worldbuilding. When I came acr...

Please read this product description carefully. Look at the preview. It's probably not what you'd expect it to be based on the title. Can we just take a moment to reflect on what an amazingly pulpy name Trench Johnson is? It sounds as if he should be fighting crime alongside Doc Savage or the Shadow, or getting beaten up in a rain-slick alleyway by Mike Hammer or Sam Spade. I can’t find anything on him other than the fact that he wrote this book, and was apparently an Englishman that lived during the Victorian era. There are no other titles credited to his name. We are free, then, to imagine him to be whatever manner of intrepid adventurer, hardboiled detective, or steampunk occultist we choose. It only adds more joy to the madness that is this hefty volume. I overlooked this book twi...

Hey there,

what is the principal difference compared to the Foragers Guild Guides? What do you suggest is better for GMs?

Kind Regads,

PUBLISHER
These are very generic, and look at elements of storytelling that apply to everything from tabletop roleplaying games to fiction to screenwriting. The Foragers Guild Guides are specifically targeted at fantasy roleplaying games and go a bit deeper in that direction.

Product Information

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
