In one golden hour, you and your friends shall weave a tale none will soon forget: a tale of good-hearted puppets in a bad-hearted world. You shall rise up against the savagery of Punch the Maker-Killer with his army of Nutcrackers and his terrible Boys, sewn from the flesh of the Maker of all puppets. You shall be steadfast and true. You shall likely die trying.

Puppetland is a storytelling game. You play a valiant puppet who speaks aloud every word you say. You speak for your puppet and the Puppetmaster says the rest. You surprise each other at every turn, collaborating moment by inspired moment to unlock your own creativity and find the puppet within. This lavishly illustrated edition of Puppetland has been significantly revised and expanded. It includes a grim storybook fable of the Maker’s foul murder; the true story of the creator’s life in Puppetland; and new Tales ready to be played, written by a brilliant collection of authors:

  • "Boys at Play" by John Scott Tynes
  • "The Great Sage OF, the Mountain!" by Arnold Cassel
  • "The Missing Peace" by Fred Hicks
  • "Overtime in the Factory" by Ross Payton
  • "Punch and the Beanstalk" by John Scott Tynes
  • "Punch Dammed It!" by Arnold Cassel
  • "Punch Village" by Jason Morningstar
  • "Puppet Masters" by Matt Forbeck
  • "The Rhyming Ritual" by Ross Payton
  • "The Terrible Fire" by John Scott Tynes
  • "Vada Wolley Rex" by Kenneth Hite
  • "Visions of Sugar Plums" by James Wallis
  • "The Lost Giant" by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan
  • "Pretty Polly" by Arinn Dembo
  • "The Box" by Arinn Dembo
  • "The Bottler" by Arinn Dembo

Your puppets are ready to take the stage. But speak softly, lest the Nutcrackers hear — and come to call with a sharp rap-rap-rapping at the door.

The game uses "storyteller rules". There are no mechanics; the characters are puppets that say everything their players say and have limits on what they can do in game. Gameplay is in Hours. The puppets, like characters in a play, only have one hour of real time to perform. Gameplay stops at the one hour mark and the puppets wake up back in their beds, refreshed and healed. The game's main draw is the grim gameworld Tynes created. This version is expanded from the 27-page Hogshead Games edition.

This looks interesting but $20 is a steep investment for something I know so little about. Please let us know here how this product treats you once you get a good look at it.

Andy B: It has tons of resources and ideas for games to last as long as you and your friends wish to play.

Just tried to download it again and it worked. Not sure what the issue was since as far as I know nothing has change on my computer, but I'm not complaining.

A friend of mine has a print copy so we've been playing an ongoing campaign. I would recommend this If you like games that focus on story over crunch, If you are looking for a style of play that you haven't experienced before, and/or if you've got friends who don't typically play RPGs. Having played a campaign I would say its more suited to one shots and short campaigns just because there is no character progression (as in leveling up), though there is something special about slowly filling in puzzle pieces that represent your hp as a campaign goes on.

If you wanna know more of what the game is about I'd recommend checking out the video on the kickstarter here:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
