The world is a Lie.

Humanity is cursed into a prison of Sleep, ignorant of the wonder and danger all around them. Ground down into slavery to masters they’ll never see, beset by a plague of cares to distract them from the Truth.

You were like them, once, but now you are Awakened. You see the world beneath the Lie’s skin, and the Mysteries beckoning you into the shadows. Every day of your life, you hear the call of the supernatural, from the least ghost to the deepest cosmic enigmas.

You are a mage, one of the Wise. You see, know, and explore what others can’t imagine, from the depths of the human soul to the hidden corners of reality. Armed with your spells, driven by an addiction to Mysteries, you delve into the secrets of the world. Knowledge has a price, and the dangers are many.

This book contains:

  • The complete guide to playing a mage in the Chronicles of Darkness.
  • Reimagined Paths, Orders, and powers to create your Awakened characters and their allies, including an updated version of the most comprehensive free-form magic system in gaming.
  • Five example settings across the world, from Los Angeles to Salamanca, each with a central Mystery.
  • A brand-new look at all the strange places of the Fallen World, from the Lower Depths to the Emanation Realms, and what mages might find within.

Also available for Mage: the Awakening 2nd Edition:

Mage: the Awakening 2nd Edition Condition and Numina CardsPart of the new Mage the Awakening 2nd Edition rules, Conditions add an additional layer of consequence and reward to certain actions in the Chronicles of Darkness.

The Fallen World Chronicle Anthology - Contains 12 short stories (8 original to this collection) of magic and mystery, in celebration of the second edition of Mage: The Awakening.

Note on the Print Editions: Standard Color uses a thinner paper stock than Premium Color, basically the same paper as the Black & White books. This usually means the colors are less vivid, but it also means the price drops a bit per page in the production process. Examples of pages: Premium Color vs. Standard Color.

But seriously I want a book with some updated Legacies. I'm dying over here for something official that isn't just The Eleventh Question - like, at least put out a few 4- or 5-page PDF teasers, at like $2 each, and then for each Legacy that appears in your Legacies book, give a little discount (like $2.01? Idk).

Just throw us a bone here, man! Even like four more would give me a better idea of how to design my own so I'm not totally beholden to your slow-as-cold-molasses publishing rate. :P

Does the current version of the PDF already include the fixes from the huge errata?

A year later and still no answer?

I would like to know before purchasing, especially a printed copy.

It has an Index and a good Table of Contents, not the crap from the early days. You can even search in the PDF Version for almost anything.

What's the difference between the standard and premium heavyweight
Customer avatar
Misha B December 05, 2016 2:22 pm UTC
Standard Heavyweight is what you would expect from a good, but not perfect Print-on-Demand book (matte pages, minor print stutter on left-facing pages, inks desaturated a little compared to what you would expect) while Premium Heavyweight is EXACTLY like WW/OPP's original print runs (gloss pages, smooth, heavy pages with perfect colour saturation, really high quality).

Stadard Heavyweight is also thicker in spine width than the Premium. I don't think Premium is worth almost double of Standard, but if you want the old fashioned experience, you need Premium.

Do you actually own a Premium copy of this game?

My Premium copy has matte pages and the pages are glued together to a piece of cardboard rather than a piece of cloth. It actually seems quite different from the original Onyx Path books and much closer to a Standard Heavyweight copy.

As a matter of fact, I am slightly worried that what I've received might be a Standard copy.

Will there ever be a storyteller's screen for this game?
Customer avatar
Luis M November 14, 2016 7:49 pm UTC
I would love to know this also!! Want the screen from werewolf and vampire also... Not digital. :) do They have planning on this? Talking about 2nd edition products.

DriveThruRPG isn't able to make POD storyteller screens, so I doubt it.

I received my printed copy and it begins on page 49. How do I remedy this situation?

If you haven't already I highly suggest chucking them an email to let them know about it :s

I bet the Free Council just wanted you to play a game solely about them, who cares about the Diamond!

Do i need the Chronicles of Darkness core rules to play Mage: the Awakening 2nd edition?
Customer avatar
Gabriel P November 01, 2016 7:27 pm UTC
No. All the rules should be covered on the book.

So I am an old Mage player from way back. I have Awakening 1st ed and I liked it. But which game should I buy? This one or the new Mage: The Ascension 20year edition?
Customer avatar
Daniel S June 15, 2016 6:23 am UTC
They're different games with different themes.
M20 is a 'greatest hits' version of Mage: the Ascension. It's intended to be all the good stuff in a single gigantic book (seriously, google it, it's huge).

Mage the Awakening 2e is what it is - a 2nd edition of Awakening. Cleaner 2e rules, revamped magic rules (no more ritual casting to superbuff yourself), clearer themes (more focus on cool magical mysteries, less focus on mage-history), clearer overview of enemies. Generally more focus on what you do, which is welcome.
Basically, it's an enormous improvement in every way from the 1e core.

Which one to buy? Whichever game you feel like running!

Awakening is a polished game, and for some this is the most important factor. However, for me the fundamental aspect of Ascension was the concept of consensual reality and the post-modern themes that were associated with it. Awakening replaces this with a fixed magical background, mostly based upon a straight Gnostic world view. Ascension is an edgy game, and the 20th Edition is mainly written as an exploration of real world magical beliefs. In the case of Awakening, however, it is plainly a game of modern fantasy with no real element of satire, polemic or controversy. To me, that is the key difference.

They both are amazing games. Personally i think the mechanics of Awakening pushes me in the direction of 2nd ed, but the background story for vanilla ascension is amazing. The world feels much darker and more real then that in NWoD. All that said i only run Awakening anymore since i can come up with my own version of the history and make the game feel real and dark. It all really depends on the strength of the ST. If you want to lean heavily on the setting as written without putting some work into the making the setting feel lived in then i saw go with Ascension. If you want to have a game with Superior mechanics while still being easier for newer players to jump into i saw use Awakening.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
