As an historian of the American West and as a fan of D&D 5e, I am very pleased with Frontier. It's well-written, fairly well researched, and provides smooth, simple rules for magic-less, non-weird Western roleplaying. I do have a couple minor nitpicks, such as the use of the word "brave" for Native warriors, which is considered offensive by many Native Americans, the assertion that French, German, and Italian languages would rarely come into play (for example, French influence in the Old West was hugely prevalent, from the days of the fur trade, to individuals native to New Orleans or St. Louis, and French place names are all over the West), and how few Backgrounds there are. But, all in all, I am very happy with this book. If I could leave a review, I would give it 4-out-of-5 stars.

Where can you find the Commander‘s maneuvers? Also does the hunter’s ambush do d6 or d8? If d8, How does it increase?

I initiated the purchase from your website where it lists that the PDF includes 6 cultures. I failed to notice that you noted on here that they have been removed. Any chance you could send that portion to purchasers who want it?

Hello Robert! Thank you for your purchase. I can absolutely send you a copy of the former version of this product, which includes the 6 Cultures. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to send it through this website, but if you email me at with your date and approximate time of purchase, I will be happy to send you the PDF directly. Thanks again.

Hey does the bundle for frontier come with the 2.0 print or the cultures print? I know its a little sensitive, but I'm genuinely intrigued by doing such a bold method of Character creation, even if a bit racially controversial

Hello! The Bundle comes with the 2.0 print. I have recently added the Cultures Edition as a separate title due to a high volume of interest. For anyone who orders a 2.0 book or bundle, I will provide a free Cultures Edition copy on request.

Hmm, Why is there no American culture available? By the time depicted by this game America had been settled by Europeans for about 300+ years The British who made up the bulk of the people of the united states had long before developed their own culture vastly different from their ancestor's British origin. By not including a unique American Culture as an option you can't really make a truly western character. as is i would not recommend this game.

Hello, Nina. Thank you for your purchase and question! Americans do actually have a culture in this book, on Page 7 (also the last page of the preview). Americans are listed as a subculture of Europeans, because they were in fact culturally descended from them. Essentially they can be considered European-Americans. I hope this helps clarify, and that you otherwise enjoy the book!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
