Tales from the Game Tavern issue #3

Looking for Irish or Faerie Folk themed material for your game sessions? The tales involving the wee folk are very popular around St. Patrick’s Day. Whimsical, and often very dangerous, faeries are perfect for gaming inspiration.

In this issue you will find a complete adventure and supporting material. What you won’t find is any gold at the end of the rainbow. Unless of course you catch a leprechaun! As always, the entire issue is RPG system agnostic. So whether you play B/X, a retro clone, or 5E, it does not matter.

  •         Ecology of the Redcap: Murderous wee folk that haunt ruined places.
  •         Sídhe Fungus Gardens: Strange fungi and bacteria of the faerie mounds.
  •         Crock of Gold: A drop die table for use in your campaign.
  •         Mr. Tweed’s Spectacles: A mid-level adventure involving a leprechaun.
  •         Beer Bread: They will be begging for it every game session

Tales from the Game Tavern is a system agnostic RPG zine with virtually nothing to convert. The hope is this will appeal to a larger audience since the inspiration within may be used with any system. When applicable, statistics and examples are provided with common RPG terminology. When designing this zine we wanted to share with the community the types of material that are commonplace in the Game Tavern. The publication is designed to have the vibe of a classic zine while keeping to a theme with every issue.

Tales from the Game Tavern is a fun creative outlet and as such will not adhere to a strict publishing schedule. Our hope is to release a new issue every two months but that may be ambitious. Depending on the feedback received from the community subscriptions may become available down the road. In terms of submissions we are not actively looking for them now but will listen to any pitch sent. This includes artwork or system agnostic gaming material.

I have the physical book and our group had a blast with this; from the adventure to the drop die treasure to the beer bread recipe. We loved it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
