ADD TO WISHLIST >

While Maeshi province revels in the festival spirit, clouds gather over the political scene. Two warlords are vying for control of this otherwise peaceful place, and you are guests of one of them. Sun Temple officials have offered complete support to the faction which successfully travels to Ito-jo Castle (said to hold relics of great importance to the Sun Temple), brings them back safely, and returns them to the Inn of the Globefish.

The plan is laid before you. You are to leave immediately under secrecy for the castle of the Ito clan, also known as the Seven Swords Clan. Find the relics, and return them to the renowned inn Doi no Fugu. Extreme caution is needed here, for your warlord's rival must not hear of this!

Is the castle really haunted? What lies in the caverns beneath it? Will Korimori's troops discover your plan and try to wrest the relics from you, should you even get that far? What will you find at the Inn of the Globefish? Come, honorable stranger- the Seven Swords await!

Product History

OA2: "Night of the Seven Swords" (1986), by Jon Pickens, David "Zeb" Cook, Harold Johnson, Rick Swan, Ed Carmien, and David James Ritchie, is the second expansion for the Oriental Adventures (1985) hardcover; it was released in December 1986.

Expanding Oriental Adventures. Where OA1: "Swords of the Daimyo" (1986) was an introductory adventure for Kara-Tur, "Night of the Seven Swords" instead is a mid-level campaign — making it both the first mid-level adventure and the first campaign for the setting.

Adventuring Tropes. "Night of the Seven Swords" is a series of four linked scenarios for Oriental Adventures. Most of the adventure is pretty traditional for early D&D, including a haunted castle crawl, a cavern crawl, and a wilderness crawl. However, there's also a backstory about lost relics and clan rivalries, while a series of encounters leads into a cinematically appropriate finale. As such, "Night of the Seven Swords" feels like a transition that's heading toward the 2e (1989-2000) style of adventuring, which would be more story-heavy.

"Night of the Seven Swords" focuses not just on the unique setting of Oriental Adventures, but also on its rules. In particular, honor plays a role at a few points in the adventure.

Expanding Kara-Tur. "Swords of the Daimyo" provided the first detailed expansion of the Kara-Tur setting with its description of the Miyama Province of Kozakura (Oriental Adventures Japan). "Night of the Seven Swords" continues the expansion of Kozakura, but focuses on a different province: Maeshi, a somewhat isolated part of the island.

About the Creators. Pickens and Cook oversaw the development of the book, while Johnson, Swan, Carmien, and Ritchie each wrote one of the four adventure-sections. Cook was of course the author of Oriental Adventures itself, as well as OA1: "Swords of the Daimyo".

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

It would be nice if the information mentioned what levels the adventure is appropriate for.

I agree. Anyway, until the website changes their blurb, I can give you this comment:

according to the introduction page:

"It is intended for a party of 6-8 characters of level 4-6, about 30-36 levels in all."

This is a fun adventure involving opposing political factions and a haunted castle fantasy. It's almost like three different modules. There are a lot of maps, a large cast of characters, and a good deal of history for the DM to keep straight. The players had a blast with the variety of opponents and different aspects so it was worth the extra prep.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
