Toril: that blue-green orb on which live Elminster, Lhaeo, and the Harpers, to name but a few. The planet so many adventurers call "home." To many, it seems to be the center of the universe. Far be that from the truth! There are seven other planets in Toril's system, some closer to the primary star, other farther from its warmth. These pages revel the little-known facts about every planet in Realmspace: the crystal sphere containing the lands known as the Forgotten Realms. Realmspace is an accessory for the SPELLJAMMER campaign setting. The SPELLJAMMER boxed set is needed to use this booklet. The material in this accessory will enhance any FORGOTTEN REALMS campign in which the concept of spelljamming has been (or is about to be) introduced.

In addition to the 96-page booklet, this product includes:

a full-size poster map of the Realmspace crystal sphere, showing all the planets in their relative orbits. statistics on new ship types, including the Batship and the Tsunami. several short adventurers, suitable for introducing characters to the wonders of Realmspace.

Product History

SJR2: "Realmspace" (1991), by Dale "Slade" Henson, is the first of the Spelljammer Reference books. It was released in February 1991.

Continuing the "SJR" Series. The first Spelljammer Reference, SJR1: "Lost Ships" (1990), was a bit of a hodge-podge. It included a fairly random assortment of (good) material. Conversely "Realmspace" is a thematically linked whole. It includes new ships, new monsters, new magic items, and adventure items, but it's all in the context of the Crystal Sphere of the Forgotten Realms.

"Realmspace" could just have detailed how the Realms interacts with Spelljammers. Instead, it does something much more innovative: it details the many planets of the Realms' Crystal Sphere, providing new planetary settings for adventures there were previously unthought of. It even includes a beautiful map of the whole systems. In pioneering this format, "Realmspace" also created a blueprint for future references detailing the Crystal Spheres of Greyhawk and Krynn.

Expanding Wildspace. "Realmspace" depicts the first corner of what's been called the "Radiant Triangle" of Wildspace — the others being Greyspace and Krynnspace. In doing so, it formed the first strong connections between Spelljammer and an existing campaign world.

"Realmspace" also provided a potential setting for one of Wildspace's core locations, the Rock of Bral. It could be one of the Tears of Selune, as what later confirmed in Faiths and Avatars (1996).

Expanding the Realms. However, "Realmspace" may be more important as an expansion for the Forgotten Realms. It describes the entirety of Toril, Selune, the Tears of Selune, the Beholder Planet H'Catha, and more. The result is the largest expansion ever for the Forgotten Realms.

Of course, whether a 1991 Spelljammer product remains canon for the Forgotten Realms is another question. Thus far, it seems like the answer is "yes". As recently as 4e (2008-2012), Realms products have referred to "Realmspace" creations like the Galleon Nebula and in general haven't contradicted the book.

Future History. The rest of the Radiant Triangle was revealed in two future books: SJR6: "Greyspace" (1992) and SJR7: "Krynnspace" (1993).

About the Creators. Henson started writing for TSR in 1990. 1991 was one of his two most prolific years, seeing the release of over a half-dozen D&D releases covering the TSR settings of the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Lankhmar, Ravenloft, and Spelljammer, as well as the Marvel Super Heroes and XXVc games.

There is a mistake on p. 29. The distance table there is a duplicate of the one on p. 25. Instead of showing the distance to Selûne, it shows the distance to the Tears.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
