Wormskin Soon to Be Replaced by Full Campaign Setting Books
The Wormskin zine is a piecemeal exploration of Dolmenwood, and will soon be replaced by a full campaign setting in the form of three hardcover books: a player's book, a campaign book, and a monster book. Material from Wormskin will appear in the hardcover books in a revised and updated form, alongside reams of brand new material, forming a complete campaign setting of fairy tale magic and eerie folk horror. If you're new to Dolmenwood, we'd recommend waiting for the full campaign setting books, though collectors may wish to purchase the Wormskin zine issues in the meantime.

Almost All Content From Wormskin Available At Our Patreon
Backers of the Necrotic Gnome Patreon get access to the full campaign setting books in their current state of development. This currently includes almost all content from Wormskin, in a revised and updated form.

Wormskin Issue 1

  • The grimalkin race-class.
  • Four new spells of cat-kind, including the terrifying (?) furball.
  • The moss dwarf race-class.
  • One (1!) new forest-creeping monster: the root-thing.
  • A hearty article on the fungi of Dolmenwood: edible, psychedelic, and poisonous.
Wormskin explores the mythic forest called Dolmenwood, a weird folklore setting for use with B/X or similar tabletop adventure games. Each issue uncovers various elements of this eldritch realm situated on the leafy verges of Fairy, where austere Drunes rub elbows with weird elf-lords and talking beasts, where witches wander skyclad and armed with sinister magicks to bind the spirits of hapless adventurers. Be wary.

Hi i was wondering if this is done? "will soon be replaced by a full campaign setting in the form of three hardcover books: a player's book, a campaign book, and a monster book. Material from Wormskin will appear in the hardcover books in a revised and updated form"

We'll be running a Kickstarter for the full campaign setting, estimated around Q1 2023. You can see more info on the books here

There is probably a misprint on page 10. Flying speed of bird swarm written as 120'/30'. Should it be 120'/40' or 90'/30'?

Oh, well spotted! Yes, it should be 120' (40').

It seems that issue 7 reprints a few things found in other issues. Would this be the best one to buy first? I've bought Theorems and Thaumaturgy and the Vivimancer books already and from what I heard think Dolmenwood would be a nice addition.

Hi Brian, each issue of Wormskin is unique new content. There's nothing from previous issues reprinted in issue seven. Hope that answers your question!

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll have to figure out which one to pick out first. Another question though, if I buy the pdf and decide to get the print do I have to pay for it all over again or will it charge me the differance?

I'd recommend issue three, if you want to pick one to start with. That contains quite a bit of background material on Dolmenwood, which is a useful starting point.

Unfortunately, there's no way to do a kind of "upgrade to print", so you would have to re-buy if you wanted to get the PDF first then the print option later.

Have you seen the freely available downloads? (Welcome to Dolmenwood and the campaign map, for example.) Those are a good way to get a flavour for the setting before buying any issues of Wormskin.

How long before a print copy?

The process for getting the print version set up is unfortunately a bit long-winded and beset with potential problems. My first attempt, before the holidays, failed, but I set it up again yesterday. All going well, it usually takes about two weeks from initial set up to final approval, so we should be looking at mid-January.

At long last, the print version is ready! (See above :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
