Man the battlements! When you're under siege, you need the protection of big towers and heavy stone walls between you and the enemy. But when you're on a budget, raising that castle may be tough to do without taxing the peasants to the point of open revolt! Fortunately, MicroTactix Games cardstock construction guru Gary M. Williams has the answer - Dirt Cheep Keeps? are here!

Dirt Cheep Keeps is a modular construction set that lets you build realistic full color stonework walls, gates, towers, and keeps of any size in inexpensive cardstock! Print them yourself on almost any color inkjet printer and have incredibly detailed and lifelike constructions for a tiny fraction of the cost of cast resin, plastic or plaster stoneworks. Dirt Cheep Keeps are sturdy enough for your heavy metal miniatures, light enough to store and cart around easily, and cheap enough that you don't mind if you leave a few walls behind at a convention or have the main gate eaten by the dog!

Like our other Dirt Cheep construction sets (Dirt Cheep Dungeons?, Dirt Cheep Caverns?, etc.), Dirt Cheep Keeps is composed of easy-to-construct basic segments that can be put together in a nearly-infinite number of ways. The Dirt Cheep Keeps Basic Set (MTX-DCK1001) contains versatile full color PDF files to print and build stackable Octagonal Towers, peaked Square Corner Towers, two different sizes of Gates, three different sizes of Walls, and large Square Keeps. The only limit to the use of these modules is your imagination! Build anything from a small city gate to a major frontier outpost to a massive castle courtyard -- all with the inexpensive Dirt Cheep Keeps Basic Set!

Dirt Cheep Keeps aren't just stock stone patterns on paper, either. They've been created with the eye of an artist and the soul of a gamer. The intricate color artwork and realistic design is apparent when you take a character's eye view of the main gate, or imagine yourself walking the catwalks. Only MicroTactix Masters like Gary M. Williams bring cardstock to life with this much attention to the little details. Williams' eye for clever construction shows in the Dirt Cheep Keeps set as well, with walls that aren't just cardboard boxes, and octagonal towers that easily link together to soar high above the gaming table!

Use Dirt Cheep Keeps with any miniature figures in the 25 -30mm range. Tower tops and catwalks are printed with a light 1 inch grid for those who prefer it, but the set includes 1 1/2 inch "Heroic Scale" pieces that can be added for those using large-base or dial-base miniatures. Or ignore the subtle grid entirely with games on the tabletop that don't require it (like MicroTactix Origins Award nominated Budget Battlefield? Universal Miniatures Rules).

You can have the massive and realistic keeps and castles and courtyards you've always wanted -- and all for less than the price of a single gate or tower in plastic, resin or plaster! Combine with the Vyllage-on-the-Cheep? Castle Ruins, Ancient Ruins, and other building sets for even more possibilities -- it's all designed to work together! Dirt Cheep Keeps can enhance your miniatures games or roleplaying sessions without burning up your gaming budget. They're big! They're beautiful! They're modular! They're versatile! And, of course, they're Dirt Cheep!

Dirt Cheep Dungeons was one of the first print-it-yourself 3D dungeon kits available, and as such I have a strong sentimental attachment to it. The sets are reasonably easy to put together and use. However, the quality of this product is now overshadow [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
