Star Fleet Battles: Campaign Designer's Handbook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Build Your Own Galaxy!

Everything you need to design and run your own Star Fleet Universe campaign!

Campaigns are the ultimate expression of Star Fleet Battles. Only in a campaign setting does everything -- cost, fleets, technology, availability, movement, economics, deployments -- come together into a complete picture of war in space!

The Campaign Designer’s Handbook provides options allowing you to create a campaign that suits your own tastes and interests.

You won’t find very many specific, numbered rules; this is meant as a set of guidelines and a discussion of campaign structure, not as any kind of official declaration of how you should run your campaign.

This product adds new strategic game play situations, ships, and concepts for Star Fleet Battles. You must have at least the SFB Basic Set Rulebook and SSD Book to use this material. Options for using advanced and supplementary materials are included; to use those options will require those materials.

What is up with the resolution on this file? I am not pleased at all and am tempted to get my money back, but I really need this document.

Can we get a high resolution version? I am speaking of the text here: it is severely pixelated, no matter what the resolution.

I suspect that it was scanned at a low resolution and then the text was OCRed.

Steve, I can read it easily, considering its age. We've found that viewing it in a browser doesn't necessarily work well. It needs to be viewed in Adobe Reader if at all possible.

It was scanned and OCRed; I do notice some pixilation at over 100% resolution. Sadly, the only other file I have of it is in an ancient Word file that doesn't have headers, footers, or decent copies of the art.

It was created by an outside designer and his computer crashed a while back, destroying all those files. Sadly, this is the best we can do with this 1996 title.

Okay, what you are saying is that you don't have an original hard copy...? Wow.

Re-scanning it won't help. The PDF looks very much like the original. It has been up for years on another site with no complaints.

If this was done in 1996, that was not the dark ages. Laser printers were already in use everywhere. This looks like it was printed on a very old Imagewriter, one that was on its last legs.

This is a problem because I am sight-impaired. Blowing up the screen is the only choice I have when reading something. I will admit that it is legible, in the same way bad handwriting is "legible," but it puts an unreasonable strain on my sight. Unless you are sight-impaired yourself, your statement that you can read it just fine is not enough.

DriveThru: what do I need to do to get a refund on this?

It was printed on an offset press in Dallas, not a laser printer. Unfortunately, in this case, I don't think the print version would be helpful as we could see the roughness in the text and borders. By the way, our sight-impaired person on staff could read the PDF, but she did notice the pixilation.

The only thing I can offer is to send you personally the Word document. If you will contact Jean Sexton at marketing@starfleetgames.com, we can send you that file. It isn't pretty, but it does appear to have all the text.

Sorry, I meant the originals that were sent to print. I am, perhaps, a bit sensitive to bad type, but I understand where you are coming from.

I appreciate your efforts to accommodate my disability and will be contacting the referenced email address to receive a copy of the Word document, which will satisfy me.

Thank you for sticking with me! :)

Steve, we haven't heard from you yet. If you sent the email, then it may have been eaten by spam filters. In that case you might want to try j_dot_sexton_at_att_dot_net to get that file. :)

And you are quite welcome. We really do want people to be happy with our books.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
