Watermarked PDF

Each stone and brick laid cements a nation’s hold on its lands.

The strong are called upon to be the shield of the people.

The tyrants plot and rule from behind strong walls.

The world is full of danger and uncertainty.

I purchased vol 1-3 from Skermisher way back in 2011/2012. But my PDFs don't appear to be watermarked. They do appear in my DTRPG library, however. Can I send you a screen shot of that, instead?

Okay, turns out the info I was seeing is different than what you see. I've fixed that by providing the e-mail link on my website. You'll also find updates on my progress and some of my writings on game design if you're interested. I found out not too long ago about the changes as customers used to see the contact info.

I have the same problem as Bertram J, I just re-downloaded all the volumes I purchased from here (DrivethruRPG). Neither Vol. 1 Strongholds or Vol. 4 Towers has a Watermark on them. I even checked the coding for a watermark, none there either. I can send you screen caps of the completed DrivethruRPG orders if that would suffice as proof?

Well it's been over a month without a reply so I will just live without these. I understand RL work keeps one busy... There is no Contact the Author button on DrivethruRPG item pages (only links to a homepage or to the Publishers "in house" store page...). Wish you well on these... Maybe down the road I'll look at them again.

I also buy IZ2.0 so I know you just authored (Republic of Texas) recently so I know you are busy with other projects & have no time to read every dinky post on who-knows-how-many store items. Good luck with your projects!

Apologies for not responding a lot sooner. I've had to take up a lot of hats lately for my day job as well as the other writing projects. I've tried posting my contact info, but the way the site works, it doesn't allow me to. If you click on "contact publisher" or hover over it, it should show my e-mail address.

Just curious if you're going to release the entire set. I purchased 1-5 through DTRPG and hope you will reforge and issue all 10. Are my DTRPG purchases eiligible for a discount on the reforged editions.
Like these a lot.

Yes, I am going to release the entire set. It may take a bit of time given other commitments, my carpal tunnel hand, and my day job (which is using some of what I do here as part of a lessons learned for STEAM-based programming). The hold-up from the release of the the full text came from needing to find a job to not be homeless and learning how to make better looking maps, which is why the quality improved throughout each release. The text was written in 2007 and only needs a bit of work for clarity and new elements I've learned in the last eight years. The chapters are being retooled inasmuch as I'm clarifying some sections I wasn't thrilled with and felt I muddled through. I'm also foregoing as much clip art as I can by providing map snippets in varying styles in their place. As to the copies you've purchased previously: yes, they are eligible. If you can provide me with a screenshot showing your watermark by e-mail, I'll send you links with a discount for the chapters. The costs are proportional to...See more

Richard, thanks, I'm looking forward to them.
Where can I find your email to send you those pdf watermarks?

Also, what exactly is the watermark? What am I looking for in the pdf file?

Vol1 apperently has no watermarks, at least no visible ones

Hi Richard

Very nice to see that the Castle Builder Series is not as dead as I thought it to be. And thank you for offering a discount for those who already bought the Skirmisher Publishing titles.
Unfortunately Volume 1: Strongholds and Volume 4: Towers apparently do not have any visible watermarks. I'd be much obliged if you could comment on that and/or provide another method to verify the purchase of these titles.

The watermark should appear in the bottom left corner of the page. It usually is your name and customer ID#. If you can't find a watermark on your old file, a screenshot of your library works as well.

Bertram. Other than a few IRL issues that prevented me from working at the pace I wanted, the book has always been far from dead. My main issues were due to a need to keep paying bills so I could work on the maps at an ever increasingly higher quality from one issue to the next while still looking for a job after graduating from college. Unfortunately a few health issues sneaked in there as well, but barring any further issues besides my carpal tunnel and other prior contracts before moving in this new direction, I'm plugging away at the maps whenever I can. Some of them are so highly detailed due to the stronghold type's requirements that the mapping has been slower than foreseen. But, on the upside, there's a good blog post or three that I can show for it when all's said and done that'll definitely go on my website.

I feel like I'm starting to sound stupid. Where is the "contact publisher" button?
Customer avatar
Richard B December 18, 2015 5:31 am UTC
If you look at the right side of the screen, there's all the publisher info below the product info. Click on "contact publisher" and it should open your e-mail. If not, hover over it and in the bottom of your browser it should show my e-mail info.

Richard, I'm sorry, that is not in the Publisher Information I can see. I do see the redirect to your website. I could not find your email there either. Would you please email me at

Thanks, Randy S

So, when you click on "contact publisher," it doesn't try to open your e-mail client?

I don't even see a "contact publisher" link

Is the original version you mention the one by Skirmisher Publishing? And will that discount code be done for each release?
Customer avatar
Richard B December 05, 2015 11:13 pm UTC
Sorry for not seeing this earlier. To answer your questions, however: Yes, and yes. I've been revising and expanding the text as I go and any such changes will have a proportionate charge for the new material for customers who purchased the originals.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
