The Mother of All Encounter Tables

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Mother of All Encounter Tables is here!

This utility is unlike any before conceived! This is not just a random book of tables but a well-thought-out Game Master's utility that makes wilderness travel, city streets, and dungeon corridors ALL more interesting. It contains encounters for each terrain type from mountains to the ocean, in each climate from arctic to tropical, and has separate tables for day and night encounters. Also factored in are relative rarities of individual encounters, with space left in the DM to insert new monsters of his choosing. In addition to encounters with monsters and men, there are tables for unusual weather events, strange occurrences, accidents, and encounters with NPCs. Trade routes and caravans are detailed as well as trolls and dragons. After all, you never know when ants will infest your food or when the cleric will get struck by lightning!

I have this same book for the old d20 system from the early 2000s. Is this a 5th edition remake or is the same product from before? The page number is the same and there are no example monsters to compare so I am at a loss.

Thanks in advance for any response.

I just saw when it was last updated. In 2004. So this isnt the new 5th edition, this is the 3.5 stuff. Glad I didnt pick it up.

Is it safe to assume this product is only for D&D and it's many clones like Pathfinder?

I ask this because you use the term "DM" instead of the more universal term of "GM" which stands for Game Master.

Good idea, terrible product. Many of the tables simply don't work. They use a roll of 001-1000, which is fine, but even then they have mistakenly made the same roll show up more than once. Like there's a roll 165 on a table that also has a roll 165-166. It's not a misprint where they Meant to do 265, because that's still on there. It literally does the range of 101-200 twice before moving on to the 200s. This happens in several charts. As I'm reading through one section says to refer to table 8-1. I scrolled down and there is no table 8-1. I checked the other books it references (the various monster manuals. to see if it was referring to one of the tables there to make an NPC party. Nothing there either. Finally figured out that it meant table 6-1. Okay so it's a misprint, but one that caused a lot of problems wasted a lot of time. Then I discovered that that exact same misprint happened over and over and over again as several sections said to refer to table 8-1 that doesn't exist. So the creature charts are unusable....See more

A lot of errors in the encounter tables, missing number ranges. Doesn't anyone edit or proof-read or play test any more ?

This is a poorly thought out, woefully small (MOA Table with only 4 books included...yeesh), poorly laid out, utter failure. I have time to give you one example: Dogs are, roughly 9% of ALL ENCOUNTERS. On d1000 Subarctic Daytime - Marsh
Dog (wild) 081-306 Dog, War (wild-riding) 307-531 That's a 45% chance to encounter a dog, during the day, in a swamp. Almost all the cool monsters are a .1% chance, so even if this book was solid in the other areas, it fails at generating interesting encounters. Should've released just the non-monster stuff as a different product.

After several months of party flying around in an airship, I've determined that this book severely misses airborne encounters.

While this is an excellent resource, and the tables are quite expansive, none of the tables are linked within the text, so unless you are using Reader to view the file, to move to a table you have to scroll through the file since the text isn't linked, doesn't include page numbers to jump to, or have a table of contents of what pages the tables are on.

Why do I need the "Mother of all Encounter Tables" instead of the encounter tables I'm already using?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
