The Champions of ZED fantasy RPG provides all the tools for gaming in open, unexplored sandbox campaigns as it was in the earliest days of the hobby.

CoZ brings together the rules of original style play, scattered across many sources, into a single, carefully edited work. Included is not just the familiar material of the original three booklets, but additional primary sources such as the long lost "Dalluhn" draft of 1973 and design notes from the first fantasy RPG campaign, along with the houserules favored by the original games co-authors, all drawn together to provide a clear and complete picture of Zero Edition gameplay.

From dice-based world building to proper treasure stocking, Champions of ZED faithfully captures the methods of the original game under one cover. As if that weren't enough, Champions of ZED also follows the original booklets in methods of combat resolution, built on the wargame rules that came before, bringing new excitement and flexiblity to encounters, yet remaining deeply rooted in the earliest traditions of play.

Enjoy a comprehensive Zero Edition experience with Champions of ZED!

The printed copy I bought a while back is Release 6/01/16. The .PDF I downloaded today is Release 6/14/15. Are there plans to update the .PDF to match the print edition?

Is the PoD format 6"x9", 8½"x11", or another size? Is Book of Elder Magic the same format/size?

There is a reference to Dexterity improving the chance to move silently, but there is no thief class or any other reference (I could find) to moving silently in the book. Was this a deliberate inclusion in case the thief class was used, or an error?

Would this be compatible with Swords and Wizardry?

No. To put it simply. You could take any OSR adventure and convert it to CoZ but some of the early gaming concepts author Dan Boggs is using are not easy to meld with S&W straight. The closest S&W variant to CoZ would be S&W Whitebox.

Wasn't this originally featured in Fight On! Magazine?

Yes; portions of the playtest draft were first printed in FO. The current product here is much expanded and improved.

Good to know, thanks! I enjoyed what I read back in FO (and how I miss that magazine....sigh...) so it'll be neat to see how the game has evolved since then!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
