About 5 years ago now, I had started to get into TTRPGs through 5e, and I have recently started to explore and look into the older editions and OSRs as a GM from the beginning of my RPG career in the past couple of years or so (need to always broaden the horizons of what one knows and what one can offer); and I have found a few that I've liked. This is clearly one of them, and in my personal pages of history and opinion, this is in my top 10 OSRs: rate up there with Basic Fantasy RPG, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Swords & Wizardry, Stars Without Number, and etc. That is where I personally rank it. And as another had said, it seems to be clearly a labor of love. So I went ahead and bought the hardcover premium color version because I support it, and I also work better with a hard copy of a book in my hands to quickly leaf through the pages when necessary; while also wanting it to last through the ages for as long as possible. I do believe, however, a downloadable pdf for the character sheet should be...See more

Nice review! You might want to consider copying and pasting it into the review section, as folks interested in the product may look there for reviews and overlook this one in the discussion section.

For those wishing for a module to go along with this, be patient. A module takes time to produce to be sure that it is a good product. And not only that, if you are a GM hoping for a module to go along with this, it's time to put on the "big boy" pants, and start creating some of your own, if you haven't already. A little help from me and advice from me. Just create some tables with different kinds and sized starting areas, rooms, passages and etc for a dungeon; on tables using a d20 roll with different ranges for each on the die rolls. Make sure to have a dead end or two on the tables as well (because the dungeon ultimately can't go on forever). As for stocking a dungeon, take about 5-10 monsters that are good enough for some low level characters, and create another table that uses a d20 and a d8 at the same time (you roll both together), and the table ranges from 2 to 20 (you can use any single or combination of dice you like, and this is just an example from the 5e example that is given for building...See more

Ive had a problem with the printed version of this product. While the PDF type and pictures are clear and vivid, I purchased the Hardcover Color Book Premium Heavyweight and the quality was grainy and faded. I followed up with Drive Through and they checked into it and said there was nothing wrong with the printing. Did anyone else have this issue? Did anyone purchase the soft cover color printing and maybe the quality is better? I like the product Im just unhappy with the quality of the type and pictures- very dull, faded looking

I believe that the faded colors, as compared to the electronic version, is just how things are printed by Lightning Source. Some colors just don't translate to whatever printing system they have all that well. The files I upload for printing are, with the exception of not having the cover pages in the same document as the text, identical to the electronic version you can download here.

I am sorry that you feel that the print quality is not good, and hope you can get a refund if you decide it's a dealbreaker.

Out of curiosity, do the files uploaded for printing use CMYK or RGB color space? If it's the latter that could explain it.

Have the double rows of the Strength table been fixed in the print version? Also, what is the benefit of buying the Premium Heavyweight version over the Standard Heavyweight color versions?

This article might help:
https://support.drivethrurpg.com/hc/en-us/articles/209936943-What-is-the-difference-between-Premium-Color-and-Standard-Color-

But basically, standard heavyweight uses an inkjet printer while premium uses an actual offset press.

As of now, the strength table still has duplicate rows. I'm working on a revision of the whole document that should fix this and make a few other minor changes. Stay tuned...

Why are there now two files titled essentially the same PLUS a "revision a"? Which one of the THREE versions is the current? Hate to complain about a free item, but am I going to get the right version if I purchase multiple copies of the print for my gaming group?

I noticed that there are two print versions, a plain and a standard version. What is the difference?
Customer avatar
Daniel H April 28, 2016 7:58 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
The two versions are a black-and-white printing and a color printing (the one that says "Standard"). They use the same weight of paper, and differ only by the color artwork (or lack thereof in the black-and-white artwork). Theoretically, DriveThruRPG and the other sites have a premium color option available which has heavier weight paper, but I didn't make a version for that option.

Hello, I received a notice that this was updated, but both versions in my library for download list the version as: 2ND EDITION(v2.0: 8 September 2015). I do notice differences between the PDF's, though.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Can you let me know if the fgg.pdf or the For_Gold__Glory.pdf is the latest version? Thanks.

Thanks for the question, Todd C and Timothy B. The fgg.pdf is the most recent version. The differences are very minor: I replaced two pieces of artwork with sharper versions (Portrait of an African Man, page 15 and Dark Thoughts, page 345) to make them look better, and fixed a typo or two. Next time around, I'll remember to update the date in the credits as well. Sorry about the confusion!

Thanks for the kind words! I do plan on making a campaign setting that uses For Gold & Glory's rules. It'll have some campaign-specific rules, such as kits, races, and spells. It won't be a rules supplement, per se, but it'll definitely have some new rules that should be able to be generalized to other settings.

I was just wondering if you where still planning on doing a "campaign-specific rules, such as kits, races, and spells" release sometime?

Also I purchased a printed "For Gold & Glory" back in 2015, I was wondering is there any change in the rules/game play etc. with the revisions. Reason I ask is I have no way to download or review the pdf's. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
