I feel like 2.5 edition was actually the zenith of the original design philosophy of d&d - a gritty simulationist game with freeform narrative elements, puzzle solving etc, with elements of epic level heroics or high magic, but not based around pure heroics. For me, it's the real OSR.

It feels like such a shame that the combat and tactics, and complete books - kits, proficiencies etc - were not given the Piazo treatment instead of 3.5, streamlined and balanced a little, and put into a cohesive modern rule system. That _other_ path leads to abominations like pf 2nd ed, 4th and 5th ed, that are really more about some kind of gamified abstraction, where rules, not ideas are in charge.

For 2nd ed - like take thief skills for example in 2nd ed - they should just be class only proficiencies. No need for two rule systems. Just use one. THACO is a bit more complicated to work with than the newer srd d20 system, so might as well change it. profs, theif skills, thaco, ac, saves - could...See more

Loving this. Any plans to collate/collect race and class kits? I always thought that was one of the better aspects of the more classic version of this game.

So many price options! lulu has a premium for $89.00. How is that different than the $44.95 premium version here? Is this one roughly half as premium as the other?

Other than the art, what are the differences between this version and the old b&w-cover one I bought off Lulu back in the day?

Hello Fellow Gamers, on page 4 of 'For Gold and Glory' it says Ability Checks are done by rolling 1d20, plus modifiers and success is a result equal to or lower than the ability score. This matches page 13 of the AD&D 2E players hand book (premium edition). This means positive modifiers to the roll are penalties and negative modifiers are bonuses. However, the the example on page 4 of FG&G uses negative modifiers to the roll as a penalty. Is this just a typo in FG&G? Thank you!

yes it is just a typo, I didn't spend a lot of time fact checking until I got to the spells and magic items. My bad, my proofreader didn't catch little things like that either. - Moe Wildermuth (editor)

On the Initiative Modifier Table, what does Receive Charge mean?
Customer avatar
Rod B February 24, 2021 5:25 am UTC
That's the initiative modifier you receive when you have weapons like spears set to counter charging enemies.

Greetings, Salutations and Felicitations to all!

As Primary Editor in Chief of "For Gold & Glory", I have read all of the reviews and comments. It fills me with great pride to hear all of the wonderful things that some of you have said about this book. I am very happy to hear that my efforts, combined with the efforts of Justen, Dan and Adam Delvay and others, resulted in a product that I can be this proud to be associated with. A few years ago, I released a series of Official Supplements for the game. They are listed here on dtRPG under my publisher's account, The HawkWolf Network. Soon after this, I ran into a financial crisis and had to stop writing and publishing new material in 2017. Currently, I am still slowly recovering from this disaster but have decided to start writing and eventually publishing the additional supplements that were still in planning stages back then. At this time, I am adding the free pdf of FG&G to The HawkWolf Network account. This is so that I can provide...See more

oops, it's "The Hawk Wolf Network". You won't find it without the space between Hawk and Wolf.

No longer in possession of my once awesome collection of AD&D books, I was looking to start replacing them. Which would have been costly, but this Print-on-Demand product is all I need. Ok maybe as a DM, not ALL I need... Not only that, after ordering it I expected to see it in a month. Not so! The book arrived in just over a week and in fine quality. I prefer the B&W for old school books, and although I'm not a fan of the choice of art, it still looks great. Now to begin creating a new campaign for 2nd Edish!

DriveThruRPG has a good explanation of the color options here:
https://support.drivethrurpg.com/hc/en-us/articles/209936943-What-is-the-difference-between-B-W-Premium-Color-and-Standard-Color-

As for hardcover/softcover, I think that's pretty self explanatory.

I purchased this a while back and I have done art for other games that use FG&G rules as well. I am trying to reach Moses Wildermuth and or Justen Brown.

Greetings!

Woohoo! I am so happy to be revisiting AD&D 2nd edition with your book in the future.

01) If I purchase the PDF (whether with a copy of the book or not) is it watermarked like the older WotC books? I hope not because that would suck.

02) What are the differences between the standard and premium hardcover color books?

Thank you for your time.

It most certainly is not. I would guess you have a problem with your computer--the download is just a PDF. It's not encrypted, and there isn't even any watermark with purchase information. There's nothing in it that should cause your problems.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
