I already have the physical book and love it.

I wish this had a PDF version of this book.

Overall it is a great book and me and my son use it for reference on design of maps we make for our local rpg group.

This is written by Jared Blando (a well known cartographer), is 274 pages long. You can convert it to PDF online for free here; I just did it. Looks fine, but not much in the way of formatting. Hyperlinks and bookmarks are there and work.

Mostly this is written for hand-drawn (pencil, pen, ink) maps. But does have some content on Photoshop and GIMP. But still has a lot of info on backgrounds, composition (placing rivers, mountains, etc) so I expect it to be useful and interesting.

The simple problem with EPUB and MOBI is that they aren't ubiquitous. For all the features offered by the EPUB standard, the output is at the mercy of the reader's unique implementation. It just never works or looks good. PDF is certainly more restrictive, but the PDF output is correct on every platform... with enough platforms to make it universally available.

F+W is an old school mid-west US publisher. I'm sure they wrongly believe the internet was invented to serve only worldwide copyright piracy -- despite the fact that every study done shows that piracy in the West's markets (Europe/NA) has no significant impact on sales. It's an irrational fear that primarily affects baby boomers and those who don't really understand technology.

PDF would have been awesome. I'm pretty disappointed by the EPUB/MOBI formats.

Overall: Buy

This is one of those 'wish I had that' books you spot on bookshelves - and unlike some, was not disappointing.

It takes you through materials (not just 'what', but 'why') before each section deals with a different map components and their creation, step by step. Shading, detailing, inking, paints are all presented in the same way.

Even if you don't run a campaign, this book is fun - meditative and imaginative creations can adorn your walls as unique cartographic artwork.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
