The Southlands - Realm of Mystery and Adventure

Southlands Campaign Setting offers everything you need to have legendary adventures in a sprawling continent of wealthy desert empires, demon-haunted jungles, and vast savannahs where gnolls and werelions hunt.

Featuring the talents of Wolfgang Baur (Midgard Campaign Setting, Al-Qadim), Ben McFarland (Streets of Zobeck) and Brian Suskind, this 300-page setting book includes:

  • New character options for Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, with five new PC races—Gnolls, Kijani, Nkosi, Tosculi and Trollkin—plus seven minor races
  • New magic items and spells, from flying carpets to lotus magic and hieroglyph magic and combat divination
  • New foes, perilous locations and deadly hazards, including the Orcs of the Green Abyss, the Corrupted Pyramid of Khensu, the Sorcerers of Nangui, and mummified monkey swarms
  • The many gods and demons of the Southlands: Anu-Akma , Ogun, Thoth-Hermes, Eshu, Set and more

Here are enough kingdoms, treasures, monsters and adventure hooks to provide years of gaming in the deserts, jungles and tropical mountains. Use Southlands with the Midgard Campaign Setting, or bring its cities, lore, creatures, and characters to any campaign.

Is this part of Midgard? Does anyone know why they did not include it when they Kickstarted the new Midgard stuff? Thanks!

Yes, this is absolutely part of Midgard. It is included with its own chapter in the Midgard Worldbook.

Awesome. My apologies, I must not have caught it when looking at all the new Midgard stuff. Thank you for clarifying!

Is there any chance of this seeing a 5e update with the player options from the Southlands Heroes tied in?

Yes, that seems extremely likely. Check the Kobold Press sites or newsletter later this month.

Can any purchaser (or publisher) comment on the quality of the P.O.D. premium hardcover here compared to the (presumably) offset litho version from the Kobold Press website?

The Premium Color Hardcover is very nice. It's probably the nicest POD book I have, in that it has vibrant colors and sturdy binding. It does not have the nice glossy pages of an offset print run, but that is the nature of POD.

Will there be a 5E version?

Thanks Wolfgang! Is it too much to hope that (judging by the Heroes character supplements) the campaign settings and bestiaries will get reworked for 5th edition? I'd love to pick up the whole product line as they look very interesting (not to mention well produced) but unfortunately I just dont want to learn any more systems or deal with conversions...

It's entirely possible, but it will take time. We do have some Bestiary plans, starting with the Southlands Bestiary. The Midgard Campaign Setting book is fairly rules lite (you can run the setting with Midgard Heroes and the Monster Manual), as it focusses primarily on people and places and a few things unique to Midgard (such as the ley lines and the pantheon).

So yes, further Midgard conversion plans are underway.

Hi Wolfgang -- just checking to see if the Southlands Campaign Setting and Bestiary 5e conversions are still on the roadmap? I figured it was fair game to ask again, given that things may well have changed since September '15 :)

Things have changed a bit! Many (possibly most?) of the monsters in the Southlands Bestiary are included in the Tome of Beasts for 5th Edition, so the creature side of things is covered. For the setting itself, we're doing an expanded chapter on the region in the Midgard Worldbook, and there's a player-centric set of options already available in the Southlands Heroes for 5th Edition (in PDF and print).

Also, Scott Carter wrote a 5E Southlands series on the Kobold Press blog:

And there are at least 4 adventures for 5E Southlands: Cat & Mouse, Grimalkin, Tomb of Tiberesh, and Last Gasp. So.... Yes!

Does this contain any AGE system rules such as the appendix in the Midgard Campaign Setting?
Customer avatar
Wolfgang B September 18, 2015 3:43 pm UTC
Sadly, no. Southlands was written before the release of the Fantasy AGE core rules.

However, more AGE support is on the Kobold Press to-do list.

Does the game have lots of PF specific stats/rules or is it like some other midgard products which are quite sytem-agnostic?
Customer avatar
Wolfgang B September 15, 2015 9:40 pm UTC
Like the Midgard Campaign Setting book, it's quite system-agnostic. The one exception is Chapter 10, the Pantheon, which assumes Pathfinder-style clerics and domains.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
